Simply put, a date should make you feel like there’s a bright world of possibilities. Of course, it’s largely down to two people, and the connection they share, but the power of setting the mood is undeniable. Given the fast-paced universe within Mumbai itself, carving time out to dare to spend an entire day together, morning to night, can seem a little intimidating. But, with a little planning and a lot of help from places that are just as intent on holding the changing hours with indulgence, maybe you’ve got yourself the perfect date (or three), after all.
Ahead, three restaurants that seem as designed for the mood as for the meal.
Breakfast: Mokai
Long frequented by those in the know, Mokai is all things chic and relaxed. The newest addition, a sweet-talking spot, is the floating wellness matcha bar. And if starting things off at a matcha bar shaped like a ceremonial bowl, with whisk-shaped lights floating above it, sounds dreamy, that’s because it is. From the intentional placement of moss and stones inspired by Zen gardens to faithfully basing the design of the bar upon a bowl from Japan, interestingly enough, the experience doesn’t end with the visuals.
There’s a host of beauty rituals to go with it, think face masks, LED rituals, and traditional stone mills using the finest tencha leaves. Try the mango passionfruit matcha, or if you’d prefer a classic, the hazelnut hochija. Whether you’re browsing a matcha-inspired book together or simply enjoying waking up to the day, Mokai is perfect to ease into conversation.
Lunch: Bare
You’ve settled into the calm, now’s the time to nudge the day along. Head to Bare, where fun surprises are revealed at every corner. The shape-shifting space begins as an art gallery that spills into a café, which then opens into a cocktail bar and secret dining room behind a disguised door. The ambience is theatrical, but not in a performative way.
Lunch here is playful and layered. Savoury madeleines with goat cheese and pistachio, a brie Basque soufflé, and numbered cocktails leaning into the speakeasy vibe. It’s the perfect spot for curiosity to kick in. You’re exploring together, discovering together, having a cheeky afternoon drink together. It shifts the dynamic from polite to playful, from safe to a little electric.
Dinner: Kaspers
By dinner, the rules dissolve. Kaspers gives off that exclusive, elusive vibe of something that’s immediately warm, familiar, and highly mischievous. With cherubs playfully watching across walls, ceilings, and tableware, the space is whimsical without being overwhelming. White tablecloths double as canvases, inviting diners to sketch, scribble, and leave behind pieces of themselves. Seating ranges from intimate corners to lively bar spots, making it adaptable to every kind of mood. It’s romantic, but in a way that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
The food and drinks follow suit: classic, comforting, and confidently uncomplicated. You’ve got to try the French onion soup crustino–delectably bite-sized, deliciously flavoured pieces of toast that melt in your mouth. Ask for the special pasta, and you’ll be served the rigatoni, and I’d hate to give more away. Save it for a special moment, and suffice to say it won’t disappoint. You cannot end the meal without a decadent serving of the coffee cake tiramisu–just perfect to share. This part is the exhale, the part where you both can be silly, honest and fully yourselves.
May this be your cue to go on a date that doesn’t rely on chemistry alone, but also builds it. From stillness to surprise to spontaneity, each stop does something different to you, and to the space between you. Mumbai, of course, knows exactly what it’s doing.
