The best art, music, and cultural events to experience this August

August's cultural calendar is one of the year's most varied. Across the country, the month brings together immersive experiences, intimate gallery exhibitions, large-scale theatre productions, and live music that spans genres. Whether you are drawn to contemporary art, Indian musicals, or concerts that promise an evening of nostalgia, there's no shortage of reasons to step out.

This month, internationally acclaimed artists share space with homegrown voices. Superblue makes its Asia debut at NMACC with an immersive exhibition that blends technology and art, while artists like Monali Meher and Soma Das continue to push conversations around identity, memory, and everyday life. Add Papon's soulful live performance and the return of Rajadhiraaj: Love.Life.Leela, and August offers a cultural calendar that is as expansive as it is exciting.

Papon Live

Known for his soulful voice and effortless ability to move between Assamese folk, Bollywood, and contemporary music, Papon returns to Mumbai for a special live performance. Fans can expect an evening of beloved tracks including Moh Moh Ke Dhaage, Jiyein Kyun, and Bulleya, alongside the warmth that has become a hallmark of his concerts.

Second Nature

One of the year's biggest art events, Second Nature marks experiential art platform Superblue's first exhibition in Asia. Spread across all four floors of Art House at NMACC, the immersive showcase features large-scale installations by internationally acclaimed artists and collectives including Random International, teamLab, Es Devlin, AA Murakami, and Simon Heijdens. Blending technology, light, movement, and audience participation, the exhibition invites visitors to become part of the artwork rather than simply observe it.

Rajadhiraaj: Love.Life.Leela

Following acclaimed runs in Mumbai, Delhi, and Dubai, Rajadhiraaj: Love.Life.Leela returns to NMACC for its third season. Written by Prasoon Joshi with music by Sachin-Jigar, the mega musical traces the life of Lord Krishna through spectacular sets, elaborate costumes, over 180 performers, and a powerful original score, making it one of India's most ambitious theatrical productions.

The Urban Biome

The Urban Biome is set to bring together a dynamic roster of contemporary artists, including Krisha Bhuva, Hemanth Kumar, N Divya, Nivedita Shinde, Simran Yogyik, and Suni K. The exhibition explores the relationships between humans and the environments they inhabit, both indoors and outdoors. The spaces we occupy are not merely arrangements of walls, volumes, and surfaces, but living constellations shaped by objects, structures, habits and the many forms of life that coexist within them.

Swaraj: Revisualising India's Political History

As India marks Independence Week, the Tuli Research Centre for India Studies (T.R.I.S.) presents a major exhibition that revisits India's political journey through the lens of visual culture. It is curated by renowned cultural historian and archivist Neville Tuli. Drawing from one of India's most significant private collections of Modern and Contemporary Art, photography, film memorabilia, rare books, prints and archival material, Swaraj traces the evolution of India's political imagination through images, objects and public memory.

Walking Root Route by Monali Meher

At Latitude 28, contemporary artist Monali Meher presents Walking Root Route, an exhibition that continues her long-standing exploration of migration, memory, and the relationship between the human body and nature. Working across sculpture, installation and drawing, Meher transforms everyday materials into poetic forms with this presentation.

(Re)claiming Rights of Render(ing) 

NewArtX presents (Re)claiming Rights of Render(ing), a landmark exhibition curated by Manan Shah that explores the intersection of digital art, technology and contemporary practice. The group exhibition by Alex Davis, Atul Bhalla, Gigi Scaria, GR Irana, and others, challenges the notion that digital art is a sterile, automated process lacking tactile authenticity.

Resonance: The Foundation Edition

Resonance: The Foundation Edition brings together a selection of contemporary artists exploring themes of connection, materiality, and artistic dialogue. It features the works by artists Akkitham Narayanan, Anupam Sud, Bhuri Bai, FN Souza, KH Ara, Krishen Khanna, Manu Parekh, MF Husain, Paramjit Singh, Paresh Maity, Seema Kohli, SH Raza, Shobha Broota, Sunil Das, T Vaikuntam, and Zarina (Hashmi).

The New in the Everyday by Soma Das

In her latest solo exhibition, The New in the Everyday, Soma Das turns ordinary domestic life into something extraordinary. Drawing inspiration from miniature painting traditions, Das depicts everyday women and middle-class households with humour, empathy and remarkable attention to detail, while expanding her practice through wood, terracotta, and metal alongside her signature gouache paintings.

sā Ladakh Biennale

Set against the dramatic landscapes of the Leh-Kargil corridor, the inaugural sā Ladakh Biennale transforms monasteries, heritage buildings, and public spaces into venues for contemporary art. Bringing together artists and architects from India and around the world, the biennale explores Ladakh's ecological, spiritual, and cultural histories while encouraging conversations around community and sustainability.

Bengaluru International Short Film Festival

The 16th edition of the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF) returns in August, presenting its strongest competition line-up yet, with over 35 films selected in both the Indian and International Competition sections, the highest in the festival's history. Among the standout international titles are La Ligne de vie (The Lifeline) by Hugo Becke (France), Close Your Eyes Hind by Amir Zaza (Netherlands), I Gaze at the Sky by Alexandra Strunin (Poland), The Written Hour by Coke Arijo (Spain), and Round and Round by Hayato Otogi (Japan). The Indian competition features acclaimed films including Small Clouds by Shubham Sumit, Aasmani by Sayani Gupta, Bandini by Deepti Chawla, and Mehta & Co. by Rohit Sen.

The Dichotomy of Dimension

Marking three decades of shaping Bengaluru's contemporary art landscape, Gallery Sumukha celebrates this landmark anniversary with the opening of 'The Dichotomy of Dimension', a solo show of sculptures by internationally acclaimed artist and sculptor G Ravinder Reddy. This is his first solo show in India since 2017 and brings together a selected compilation of sculptures, showcasing influences and explorations of his more recent works.
