Embracing sorbet shades: A style guide inspired by Emma Stone's Oscars 2024 red carpet gown

The delicious trend of pastels is perfect for spring-summer.

Harper's Bazaar India

Emma Stone turned up at the Oscars 2024 ceremony in a stunning mint peplum gown by Louis Vuitton, and it was this dress that made a cameo in her speech as she received her award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Poor Things. The ensemble, in a soothing shade, reminiscent of scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream, brought back the spotlight on one of spring’s perennial aesthetics—sorbet dressing—catapulting it back into popularity.

With light colours in the limelight right now (re: butter yellow and peach fuzz), there’s never been a better time to take a bite of this trend.

Popular on the runway

From Loewe’s Polly Pocket-inspired pastel dream to Versace’s matching knits and skirt sets, soft shades have been making an appearance on the catwalk, too. They were not just confined to the Spring-Summer collections, with Autumn-Winter ’24 showcases featuring the cheery colours too. Miu Miu had plush cardigans and quilted jackets in shades like frosty lilac and Prada had its take on bow core with baby pink bow-studded polo necks.

As for the brands Tory Burch and Carolina Herrera, dresses in colours like light olive and blush pink ruled the runway.

How to flaunt the look

Both street style and runways provide plenty of inspiration to don the look—take a peek ahead for styling ideas.

Pair it with classic denims

If you want just a lick of the sorbet trend without committing to it fully, a pastel-hued blouse in an interesting silhouette worn with your favourite pair of denims is a foolproof way to don the summery shades. Complete the look with chunky jewellery, which is also trending at the moment.

Coquette core is not going to lose steam anytime soon, so why not hop onto the bandwagon and try the aesthetic in irresistible tones such as taffy pink. The ruffles and bows are enough to add drama, so try to keep the rest of the fit minimal.

Try the monochromatic look

Wearing one shade head-to-toe can instantly make you look effortlessly chic and elegant, so opt for a pastel pantsuit or a co-ord set when stepping out for a special occasion. You can style separates in a similar palette together as well.

Switch up your LBD for an ‘it’ dress in a pastel tone

The next time you find yourself reaching out for your go-to black dress for a date night or an event, try a sorbet-hued dress instead. While satin slip dresses in pastel colours are quite popular, ruffled bodycon dresses or tulle asymmetrical mini dresses bring an element of uniqueness to the table.

Layer on multiple tasty hues

In the mood to go all out? Then don’t stick to just one light shade for your outfit, instead pick two, or more! Soft pink and seafoam green are a match made in fashion heaven and lilac goes beautifully with pastel yellow. Add complementary darker tones through your accessories—be it black loafers, a mustard cross-body bag, or a pair of brown shades to make sure the result is not too washed out.
