5 K-dramas that will transport you to picturesque destinations

Taking a virtual trip around the world and binge-watching in one sitting? Yes, please!

Harper's Bazaar India

K-dramas have blessed us with many things—they have introduced us to delicious Korean food, increased our appreciation for cinema in languages and from cultures we might not be familiar with, and given us a life-long obsession of swoon-worthy oppas. But, did you know, they can also be a source of travel inspiration? While most Korean shows are filmed in South Korea, many use other gorgeous locations around the world (think Switzerland and Cuba) as the backdrop for their compelling plots.

So, the next time you have an itch to pack your bags and travel, watch one of these five K-dramas instead.

Crash Landing On You—Switzerland

Crash Landing On You released a few months before the pandemic struck, forcing people to be confined to their homes with ample time to catch up on shows. It is no surprise that it is one of the highest-rated Korean dramas and has gained popularity worldwide. While a majority of the show was filmed in Korea, the later (and most impactful) scenes of the romantic series were shot in the beautiful towns of Switzerland. From the azure and sparkling waters of Lake Lungern to the attractive landscape of Grindelwald village with the Swiss Bernese Alps in the background, you’re in for a visual treat.

Encounter—Cuba

A whirlwind, intense romance set in the quaint and vibrant streets of Cuba, Encounter follows Cha Soo-hyun, a socialite and daughter of a politician, played by Song Hye-Ko, as she falls in love with photographer Kim Jin-hyuk (Park Bo-gum). Viewers will be treated to shots of the region’s landmarks like the Hotel Nacional de Cuba and the Fort of Saint Charles. Plus, you get to virtually experience the happening nightlife of Cuba while sitting from your couch!

Our Blues—Jeju Island in South Korea

Want to travel vicariously to the idyllic islands of South Korea? Then give Our Blues a watch. The K-drama features an ensemble cast that will tug at your heartstrings, and follows the many facets of island life through a group of friends. It is set on the breathtaking island of Jeju with its clear, aquamarine waters and jaw-dropping sunsets, and might prompt you to take a vacation there ASAP!

Goblin—Canada

The K-drama with a cult following gave us memorable scenes with Canadian landmarks in the background. For instance, how can one forget the scene where Gong Yoo’s Kim Shin, an immortal who can time travel, teleports in and out of a red door in Quebec? The red door is actually the emergency exit at the Théâtre Petit Champlain. The rest of the show also features stunning city views of Quebec, like the imposing Hotel Fairmont Le Château Frontenac and the Fontaine de Tourny, among others.

Descendants of the Sun—Greece

Starring Song Joong Ki as the charismatic leader of a South Korean special forces unit and Song Hye Ko as an ambitious military doctor (and also his love interest), the 12-episode series takes place, for the most part, in the fictitious country of Uruk. In real life, it was shot in scenic Greece, with exquisite locations such as the turquoise Navagio beach, the sand dunes of Gomati, and the charming town of Myrina and Arachova serving as the perfect backdrop for the Korean romance.
