The 78th Emmy Awards: Every winner, from 'Widow's Bay's' sweep to Jean Smart's domination

The 78th Emmy Awards threw some surprises at the viewers and the television industry from the beginning. They brought on Mariska Hargitay and broke the 15-year streak of male comedians hosting the Television Academy Awards. Hargitay took the opportunity to poke fun at the same in her monologue: “Imagine that: For 15 straight years, Amy and Tina said no.”

Apple TV’s new horror comedy, Widow’s Bay, had nabbed 19 nominations, and today it dominated the winners’ list as the stars of the show, Matthew Rhys (who also won the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me), Stephen Root, Kate O’Flynn, and director Hiro Murai picked up the trophies. Another Apple TV sci-fi drama, Pluribus, brought the accolades for lead actor Rhea Seehorn and showrunner/writer Vince Gilligan.

Jean Smart made history as she picked up the Emmy for Lead actress in a comedy series for Hacks. She won in the same category for all five seasons. She is now tied with Cloris Leachman, Julia Louis-Deyfus, and Allison Janney for the most Emmy wins. Despite having a roaring debut and one of the most-anticipated conclusions, The Bear had only one win, and The Studio remained winless. Netflix’s anthology Beef met the same fate.

Taylor Swift made an appearance in a Law & Order: SUV sketch with Hargitay and solved the mystery of whether she will be attending the Emmys. The detective work of finding clues in the trail left by Swift took a jab at Swifties inspecting every move and post the singer made to predict her next step.

In the In Memoriam section of the awards night, the industry paid tribute to Dolly Parton, Catherine O’Hara, Rob Riener, and others. Michael J. Fox was honoured with the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his contribution towards research on Parkinson’s disease.
