For nearly three decades, the world of Harry Potter has captivated millions worldwide. What began as a book series in 1997 soon became a cultural phenomenon on the big screen, etching the faces of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint into the collective memory of an entire generation. Through them, characters like Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley were brought vividly to life—faces that became synonymous with courage, friendship, and magic.
Now, a new generation of actors is set to take the mantle as HBO announces the cast for its much-awaited Harry Potter reboot series. After widespread anticipation and speculation, HBO has officially revealed that Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will play the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, respectively.
Much like Daniel Radcliffe when he was cast at the age of 11, Dominic McLaughlin steps into the role of Harry Potter as a newcomer, making this his first major onscreen role. He will also appear in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow, which coincidentally stars Nick Frost, now cast as Hagrid in the reboot. Among the trio, Arabella Stanton, who takes on the role of Hermione Granger, comes with the most acting experience, having previously starred in Matilda: The Musical on London’s West End. In contrast, Alastair Stout, who plays Ron Weasley, is making his screen debut with this series. His casting has drawn particular attention among fans for his striking resemblance to a young Rupert Grint, with many Potterheads calling it one of the most spot-on castings of the reboot.
As many as 32,000 kids had auditioned for what are undoubtedly three of the biggest TV roles of the coming decade. “After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron,” said showrunner Francesca Gardiner in a joint statement with executive producer Mark Mylod. “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold,” the statement continued. “And we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned.”
Set to stream exclusively on HBO Max, the new series promises to be a faithful adaptation of the original books by J K Rowling, who also serves as an executive producer. Each season will explore one book in depth, allowing more time to dive into the rich storytelling and magical universe that the films could only touch upon. The show is expected to span over a decade.
Joining the lead trio is a stellar supporting cast that brings fresh energy to Hogwarts’ iconic faculty and figures. John Lithgow (of Conclave, The Crown) steps into the commanding role of Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer (from Mission: Impossible–The Final Reckoning, The White Queen) portrays the sharp and steady Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu (of I May Destroy You and Gangs of London fame) takes on the complex character of Severus Snape, and Nick Frost (from Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) lends his larger-than-life presence to the beloved Rubeus Hagrid. Completing the ensemble cast are Luke Thallon (Leopoldstadt, Patriots) as the nervous and mysterious Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Harry & Paul) as the caretaker Argus Filch.
