Bixie cuts for mature hair: How to make the elegant style work for you

Cool, practical, and oh-so-chic

Harper's Bazaar India

Short hair is having a major moment this year. It makes an impact even with minimal styling, looks incredibly chic no matter your age, and gives strands a fresher, healthier appearance by removing dry, split ends. Midlength cuts are a great way to ease into it, while bobs are endlessly versatile. But if you're ready to take it a step further, why not try the bixie cut?

A hybrid between a pixie and a bob, this haircut sits just by the nape of the neck, similar to a grown-out pixie crop or micro bob. As seen on Halle Berry, who wears hers with natural curls and a face-framing fringe, the bixie's relaxed vibe feels elegant for all ages, including those who are over 50.

How to Make the Bixie Cut Work for You

"A bixie has all the benefits of a short style, but because the front is kept longer and softer, it has none of the severity of other short haircuts," says Sasha Leslie, senior hairstylist at Nicola Clarke.

Of course, your age shouldn't dictate your haircut. Instead, have a thorough consultation with your hairdresser about your lifestyle and fashion aesthetic to find the best bixie for you. After all, there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to hair.

That said, Leslie is a fan of a shorter bixie or “undercut” version to "remove bulk while maintaining length for thicker curly hair." If you're too busy to schedule regular trims, keep your bixie longer and closer to a bob so it grows out seamlessly. As for finer strands, Leslie recommends a stronger or more graduated silhouette to build volume.

Daily styling shouldn't take too much time. "It can be simply dried and then styled with Hair by Sam McKnight Dressed To Kill Creme or Perfect Mess Sculpting Clay,” Leslie says. “You could also blow-dry with Sam McKnight's Superlift volume spray for something extra [polished]."

Consider your next hair transformation sorted.
