#BazaarWomenInFocus: Meet supermodel Ujjwala Raut who showed the world what Indian beauty looks like

From YSL to Victoria’s Secret, Ujjwala Raut’s runway reign proves that true icons never fade.

Harper's Bazaar India

When Ujjwala Raut first stepped onto the runway at 17, the idea of an Indian model on the global stage was almost unheard of. Nearly three decades later, she stands tall, not just as a supermodel but as a symbol of persistence, pride, and timeless glamour.

From becoming the first Indian face of Yves Saint Laurent to walking for Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci, and Valentino, and even striding the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2002 and 2003, Raut's career reads like a masterclass in breaking boundaries. She didn’t just walk the runway; she redefined what Indian representation in fashion could look like.

Through the early 2000s, when global fashion was still far from inclusive, Raut brought an entirely new energy to the catwalk. Her striking confidence, ramp presence, and unmissable Indian poise made her an instant standout. Every step she took challenged the narrow definitions of beauty that once dominated the industry in the country.

Even today, she remains one of India’s most recognisable faces in fashion—an enduring reminder that elegance and edge can co-exist. What perhaps is most compelling about Raut's story is her ability to adapt without ever losing her authenticity. She has navigated the changing tides of fashion with the same ease that made her a favourite among some of the world’s biggest designers.

This year, as she accepted her Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Award, Raut stood radiant—a woman whose presence still commands the room. Her speech reflected that same humility and drive that has fuelled her journey for years.

“Thank you, Harper’s Bazaar, Rasna and the entire team for making this so special and letting me keep going because I am not going to stop. Thank you to my family, my daughter, my mentors and my colleagues. It’s a great evening. Thank you so much, and congratulations to the other winners!" she said.

Behind the dazzling campaigns and runway moments lies a story of endurance, evolution, and endless passion for the craft. Today, Raut continues to inspire a generation of models and creatives to dream beyond borders. Her legacy is not just about being the first; it is about opening doors for everyone who came after.

She reminded everyone at the event that she is “not going to stop.” Because icons don’t retire. They just keep walking.
