Grey is the only denim that matters in 2024

In 2024, we’re setting aside our once beloved classic blue and black denim in favour of another, equally desirable and versatile shade: grey! Looking back at the latest showcases from fashion week, we see just how popular this chromatic brightness is. So much so that greys are sure to find their way into every piece in our wardrobes. The most recognisable denim model is undoubtedly the indigo-patented garment crafted by Levi Strauss in 1873. Today, it’s a wardrobe staple. After the Y2K-inspired craze surrounding brown denim that took fashion by storm in 2023, we think it’s safe to say that grey will be the denim colour of the year.

Many designers and fashion houses revisited the trend on the catwalks of spring 2024 fashion week—proving that a pair of grey jeans can be worn with everything. At Diesel, a brand renowned as the denim maverick, these come in a washed-out look. At Loewe, they were given an extremely high rise and replaced suit pants to redefine the lines of officewear. Maria Grazia Chiuri turned it into a skirt/jacket ensemble at Dior that perfectly amalgamated chic and casual. Fashion 'it' girls are hopping on the trend, too: Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have been spotted hitting the streets of New York wearing oversized denim pants.

Grey denim was all over the fashionable streets of Milan, Paris, and New York, replacing the eternal indigo blue or black alternatives from bootcut, slim, and low-rise jeans, to skirts, dresses, and jackets. In case you haven't noticed, the onset of grey was very present in the fall-winter 2023 fashion trends, dare we say ubiquitous—from sweaters to classically tailored suits to grey jeans. 

Instead of betting on navy blue or black denim designs, expect to see more fashion girls lend their approval to grey denim this year. After all, a new year heralds a season of change and transformation—and what better way to embrace that vibe than by updating your jean collection or revisiting it with new combinations? The good news is that grey jeans are so easy to style. The modern, versatile wash is elegant and sophisticated; its neutrality is equally charming as a blank palette to play with bold accessories and colourful tops.
