Balloon silhouettes are blowing up the fashion scene

A little puff never hurt anyone! The balloon silhouette is the drama your closet’s been missing.

Volume is the name of the game this year, with the ‘balloon silhouette’ leading the charge. Also known as the bubble hem, this voluminous garment construction technique transforms everyday garments into sculptural statements. It transforms basic silhouettes into architectural pieces with unconventional charm.

From puffed sleeves to barrel trousers, the trend is commanding a play on proportions this season. If your wardrobe feels a touch too streamlined, consider the balloon shape your cue to embrace a little drama. A nod to vintage, theatrics and all. And for those of you who rendezvoused with the balloon-shaped garments of the early 2000s (guilty), get ready for its 2025 revival that arrives with a newfound sense of polish and panache. Here’s how to reinstate the balloon silhouette in your wardrobe today.

Balloon, Balenciaga, and the birth of volume

But first, let’s set the record straight: the balloon silhouette wasn’t born in the early 2000s. Its roots stretch much further back, to the couture ateliers of the 1950s, when Cristóbal Balenciaga—the original architect of volume—introduced the sac dress. The shape deliberately broke away from the body, challenging the cinched waists and hourglass ideals of the era, disrupting the monotony and radicalising women’s fashion forever. Around the same time, he debuted his now-iconic balloon jacket, alongside rounded skirts and bubble-structured gowns that literally redefined proportions in couture.

Beneath those billowing forms were often equally engineered understructures like balloon-shaped petticoats and crinolines designed to hold volume in place while keeping movement graceful. In essence, the silhouette was as functional as it was theatrical, offering liberation from restrictive corsetry while creating drama in motion.

Fast forward to the early aughts, and the bubble made its comeback; only this time, it wasn’t confined to couture. The Y2K version of the silhouette was preppy, but also punk. Think taffeta minis and puffball hems that hovered somewhere between a prom-night fantasy and an emo music video. The balloon silhouette had evolved from a carefully constructed foundation piece to a symbol of self-expression. Yet it still echoed the spirit of rebellion from the 50s and refusal to play by the rules, just like Balenciaga would’ve wanted.

Back with a bang

So, why now? Why is this playful, puffy shape floating back into fashion’s orbit? Well, it’s probably because the fashion world craves disruption. And the balloon silhouette is the perfect catalyst. The trend has re-emerged and it’s taking up space, both literally and metaphorically. After seasons of streamlined tailoring and minimalist luxury, designers are once again leaning into volume.

The runways were proof of this new momentum. At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière reimagined the bubble hem in architectural skirts that swayed between futuristic and feminine. Jonathan Anderson at Loewe (and Dior in spirit) explored “double-balloon” layers that nodded to the grandeur of French panniers, while keeping the look unmistakably modern. Meanwhile in Milan, Bottega Veneta’s new creative director, Louise Trotter, presented ballooned leather bombers and voluminous tunics that translated the silhouette into wearable, grown-up luxury.

Even off the runway, the fascination continues. Google data shows a rise in searches for “balloon sleeve dress” and “balloon skirt outfit,” signalling that the trend is not just reserved for fashion week.
