A look at Wednesday Addams’ top Goth-chic looks from the show

A major reason, why I, an avid cinephile, love watching movies and web series is because I get to see the world that they are set in. It also helps me understand the world of fashion a little better. And my most recent takeaway is learning what Gothic fashion is all about. Credit where credit is due, there’s only one show, rather cartoon, that exemplifies the Goth aesthetic—The Addams Family. Among the Tom and Jerrys, Captain Planets and Scooby Doos, this fantastic show always intrigued me just for how different, spooky and amazing its title track was. It’s playing in your mind now isn’t it? Right from the 1930s, where they began as a comic strip in The New Yorker, this has been a franchise that’s left behind an indelible mark on the world of fashion. There’s a reason why costumes worn by these characters are an absolute rage come any costume party and Halloween. And no prizes for guessing, that Wednesday, in her black dress with white collar, pigtails, and a face that could even scare death, is the OG Goth girl. 

The only daughter in the Addams family, who was merely just another person in the premise, gave us a spooky surprise ahead of the holiday season, with her very own Netflix show titled Wednesday. Such has been the frenzy that the show, that released on November 23, has become the most-watched series on Netflix—with 341.2mn hours of viewing time—in the first week of its release. The series, directed and produced by Tim Burton and starring Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Luis Guzman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, follows the Addams family's 16-year-old sarcastic and uncompromising daughter as she enrolls in a new boarding school, Nevermore Academy, where she is surrounded by mysterious spirits and supernatural creatures.

Styled by costume designer legend Colleen Atwood, Ortega as Wednesday is giving us the popular TikTok ‘dark academia aesthetic’ vibes—think black tulle dresses, collars that look like spider webs, black and white stripes, and other such Goth pieces. 

Let’s start with her school uniform. All eyes at Nevermore Academy are on Wednesday as she dons a black striped blazer, a striped pleated midi skirt, and Silent D Black Platform Oxfords.

Polka dots never looked better before Wednesday made heads turn (zombies can do that you know) wearing a custom-made black floral dot long-sleeve maxi dress coat.

If like everyone else, you have got your eyes on the bag that Wednesday carries, and are wondering what it is, it’s a Cambridge Satchel Company Black Double Buckle Square Leather Backpack.

Fans of Wednesday had their jaw drop when the OG Goth icon appeared wearing an oversized black zip-up hoodie sweatshirt, American Apparel Black Stripe knee socks, and naked Wolfe Black Platform sneakers. 

Add to that, a Miu Miu black and white stripe cardigan that made us want to feel warm and fuzzy after having shivers sent down our spines. 

As well as a LK Bennett Black Button Up Leather Jacket and a J. Crew Black/White Gingham Sweater.

We can’t not mention another black and white look where she is wearing a Zara black crop puffer vest, a Zara black and white checkerboard long sleeve top, and Dr. Marten classic platform high top boots.

And it didn’t just stop there. Take a look at Wednesday wearing an Urban Outfitters black and white checkboard long-sleeve top. 

As far as our absolute favourite Wednesday look from the show is concerned, there’s only one winner—the black chiffon ruffle Alaïa gown, which she wears to the dance. In an interview, Atwood said she was lucky enough to spot the dress on a mannequin in Bond Street, London.

Walking with utmost confidence in her stride, the shoes that Wednesday wears are Prada's Monolith brushed leather lace-up shoes. 

 

Goth glam trend never went out of style with it being all over the red carpet and countless galas in tinseltown. And thanks to Wednesday, fashion followers across the world now have a host of new additions to their wardrobe that’ll have all eyes on them.
