House of the Dragon is finally returning after a nearly two-year wait, and if you've forgotten who is fighting whom in the Targaryen civil war, you are not alone. The HBO series has spent two seasons building the 'Dance of the Dragons', a brutal conflict that split House Targaryen into two rival factions. On one side is Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen and her supporters, known as the Blacks. On the other is King Aegon II Targaryen and the Greens, backed by Queen Alicent Hightower and her family. By the end of season 2, the political tension had evolved into full-scale war, with dragons, armies, and entire kingdoms preparing for bloodshed.
House of the Dragon season 2 was largely about positioning pieces on the board rather than delivering the war itself. Armies marched, alliances shifted, and new dragon riders emerged, all while both sides suffered devastating losses. The finale ended with Westeros standing on the edge of multiple battles, making season 3 the moment when the conflict truly explodes. Here's everything worth remembering before heading back to the Seven Kingdoms.
How the war began
The roots of the conflict go back to King Viserys I naming his daughter Rhaenyra as heir to the Iron Throne. After his death, Alicent and the Hightowers crowned her son Aegon II instead, creating two rival claims to the throne. Season 1 ended with the accidental death of Rhaenyra's son Lucerys at the hands of Aemond Targaryen and his dragon Vhagar, turning a political dispute into a personal blood feud.
The most shocking consequence of Lucerys' death came through the infamous Blood and Cheese incident, when assassins sent in retaliation murdered young Prince Jaehaerys, Aegon's son. The tragedy deepened the hatred between the two sides and pushed the realm closer to war.
Elsewhere, Daemon spent much of the season at Harrenhal, battling his own doubts and visions before ultimately reaffirming his loyalty to Rhaenyra. Aemond increasingly emerged as the Greens' most dangerous weapon, while Aegon II was badly injured during the Battle of Rook's Rest, leaving much of the military leadership in Aemond's hands.
The dragon riders you need to remember
One of season 2's most important developments was the rise of the Dragonseeds. Rhaenyra recruited people with distant Targaryen blood and successfully matched several of them with riderless dragons.
Hugh Hammer, Ulf White, and Addam of Hull suddenly became major players because dragons can change the course of the war. Going into season 3, these new riders may prove just as important as the royal family itself.
Where everyone stands now
By the finale, neither side had secured a decisive victory. Rhaenyra had strengthened her position with additional dragon riders and support from key allies. The Greens still controlled King's Landing, but Aegon had fled with Larys Strong while Aemond effectively led the war effort.
Alicent appeared increasingly conflicted, while armies across Westeros were already marching toward battle.
What to expect from season 3
Based on George RR Martin's 'Fire & Blood', season 3 should finally deliver the large-scale war that viewers have been waiting for. The most anticipated event is the Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval confrontation involving the Velaryon fleet that many expected to see in season 2. Showrunner Ryan Condal has already indicated that the battle will play a major role in the new season, with fans hoping it opens the season itself.
Book readers also know that some of the war's most significant turning points are approaching. Without revealing the biggest spoilers, expect major character deaths, shifting control of power, larger dragon battles and the arrival of new figures who will influence the outcome of the Dance. If House of the Dragon seasons 1 and 2 were about choosing sides, season 3 is where Westeros pays the price.
House of the Dragon season 3 is set to premiere on June 21, 2026.
