The year 2022 gave us some memorable K-dramas—from the worldwide sensation All of Us Are Dead, the zombie series, to Extraordinary Attorney Woo, the cute rom-com that was lauded for showing a main lead with a disability (the female protagonist is autistic in the show), we were spoilt for choice. If you, like this writer, sacrificed their sleep to binge-watch till the wee hours of morning, we’ve got news for you; be prepared to pull even more all-nighters this year because the K-drama calendar looks packed, and promising. Here are the ones we will surely be cordoning off our schedule (sleep and otherwise!) for.
All of Us Are Dead (Season 2)
Even though you might not be a big fan of Korean dramas (if that’s the case, why are you reading this story?), you have to accept that Koreans know their way around the horror genre. From historical thrillers to zombie films (Train to Busan, anyone?)—you’ll find a range of shows and movies that will have you at the edge of your seat. All of Us Are Dead is one such example. Based on the famous webtoon, Now at Our School by Joo Dong-geun, it follows a group of school kids during a zombie outbreak, and the chaos that ensues. As per posts shared on social media, filming for the second season has already began, and it is slated to release sometime in 2023.
Squid Games (Season 2)
While K-dramas have always had their fans, it was Squid Games that catapulted the Korean television industry to worldwide recognition. And now, the show is getting the much-anticipated second season. While it’s not confirmed when it will be out—there are speculations that it won’t be released until late 2023, you’ll find us blocking the entire weekend off to binge watch when it does come.
Gyeongseong Creature
What do you get when you put three famous Korean actors in one drama—major hype even before the complete details about the series are out. Starring Park Seo-joon (of What is Wrong with Secretary Kim fame), Han So-hee from Nevertheless, and Wi Ha-jun, who stole hearts in Squid Games and was most recently seen in Little Women, it’s bound to be a success. The thriller series follows a couple of residents of Gyeongseong (Seoul’s old name) as they encounter and fight against devilish creatures during the Japanese rule.
A Time Called You
Based on the Taiwanese drama, Someday or One Day, the upcoming K-drama series has Jeon Yeo-been (famous for her role in Vincenzo), and Ahn Hyo-seop (who recently appeared in Business Proposal) play the leading characters. Under mysterious circumstances, Jeon Yeo-been’s character Jun-hee finds that she has time travelled and is now a high school student named Kwon Min-joo in 1998. Things take a turn for the worse when she realises that the school’s sweetheart bears a striking resemblance to her deceased boyfriend. And since it’s a K-drama, a love triangle is thrown into the mix too—the popular guy’s best friend happens to fall for Min-joo and that’s where the fun begins.
The Girl Downstairs
Like most K-dramas, The Girl Downstairs is also based on a webtoon, called Lee Doona. Starring Bae Suzy and Yang Se-jon in leading roles, it revolves around the life of a college freshman who moves into his new apartment on his first day of college but soon realises that his neighbour is none other than Lee Doo-na, a former celebrity who quit her flourishing career to pursue higher studies. What follows is a whirlwind romance—we can’t wait to watch and swoon over these two!
