The French bob is one of beauty's most coveted hairstyles. Elegant, timeless, and somehow cool, the look takes its name from the cut favored by Parisians and French beauty icons and has since been embraced by a host of celebrities, from Hailey Bieber to Helen Mirren. The famous style is one of the easiest haircuts to embrace in the summertime, in no small part due to its breezy, undone finish and low-effort styling—especially if you have mature hair, which tends to be on the fine side.

“A French bob is a stylish, easy-to-maintain look with a natural, textured finish that hugs the jawline or sits just below it,” explains hairdresser Ryan Wilkes from Hershesons Belgravia. “It’s a look that can adapt to all hair types, giving a natural, undone feel with a softer, more flattering, low-maintenance approach.”

Here, expert hairdressers explain how to adapt this iconic hairstyle for mature hair types, including the best ways to style it for this summer and how to achieve your most low-maintenance look yet.

What Is a French Bob?

In short, the French bob is a jaw-length haircut defined by generous movement and texture. It can range from wispy to wavy, but always retains the same airy shape and effortlessly undone finish.

“The French bob is a softer, more relaxed take on a classic bob,” says hairdresser Tim Scott-Wright of Hair Surgery and a Schwarzkopf Professional ambassador. “Typically, it sits around the jawline with gentle movement and is often paired with a fringe to create shape and definition without feeling overly styled or rigid. It has that effortless feel that works across different ages and hair textures.”

Why Would Mature Hair Benefit From a French Bob?

As with any haircut, understanding your texture’s specific needs is essential to achieving a flattering finished result.

“For mature hair, the French bob works particularly well because it instantly creates the appearance of fuller, healthier-looking hair with very little styling,” says Scott-Wright. “As hair naturally changes in density and texture over time, keeping length around the jaw can give movement and body without weighing the hair down. It also frames the face beautifully, making it a flattering option that still feels modern and easy to wear.”

How to Style a French Bob on Mature Hair

When it comes to styling a French bob, hairdressers agree that less is certainly more.

“The key to styling a French bob is embracing natural movement; it isn’t supposed to look perfect,” says Scott-Wright. “I’d recommend a lightweight volumizer, such as Schwarzkopf Professional’s OSiS Air Whip mousse, applied to damp hair before roughly drying to encourage natural movement. The beauty of the French bob is that it should feel easy to recreate day-to-day.”

If the final result doesn’t look perfect, which can often happen with rough-drying or air-drying, a small amount of additional styling may be needed.

“Once the hair is dry, I’d use tongs and a twisting technique to create a slightly dishevelled, effortless finish rather than a polished curl,” says Philipp Haug, ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional. “To complete the look, I’d finish with OSiS Texture Craft Spray. Unlike a traditional hairspray, it adds texture and hold while still allowing the hair to move, giving the French bob that cool, undone feel.”
