In the summer, the allure of simpler, more manageable haircuts is at an all-time high. Luckily, low-maintenance cuts come into play because they grow out gracefully, require minimal day-to-day styling, and require far fewer trips to the salon—plus, the inspiration is endless.
According to Neale Rodger, hairstylist and style director at STIL Salon, this plethora of easy, timeless cuts reflects an overall shift toward haircuts that feel practical yet embrace individuality. “We’re seeing a growing appreciation for cuts that enhance confidence rather than chasing anti-aging ideals,” says Rodger. “Clients want hair that’s easy to live with, not hair that feels like a full-time job.”
Marc Trinder, creative director of Trinder Hair Studios, adds that increasing awareness of hair condition also plays into the shift. He cites styles that limit heat use, minimize damage, and lean into “natural curls and waves, instead of relying on daily straightening.”
When it comes to mature hair, Neäl & Wølf’s head stylist and educator, Laura Elliott, explains that this new wave of low-maintenance haircuts is all too fitting. “As we get older, changes like shedding, slower growth, dryness, frizz, and graying roots can occur.” In these cases, shorter styles and those that make use of texture or clever cutting techniques can help hair appear fuller and healthier—without the extra upkeep.
Ahead, Bazaar consulted the three hairstylists to compile the five best, most flattering low-maintenance haircuts for mature women. From the soft bixie to the layered midi, take inspiration from these strategic styles for summer 2026.
1. The Textured Bob

Elliott calls the textured bob a modern, more playful take on the classic blunt bob. Rather than sharp, blunt edges, “the textured bob incorporates soft layers and subtle internal shaping to create a lived-in look that’s full of movement and dimension.” Elliott notes that this technique removes excess weight while encouraging natural lift, which makes it particularly flattering for mature women experiencing finer hair, density loss, or a lack of volume around the crown.

Trinder notes that the textured bob is equally ideal for the warmer months. “If you’re happy to let your natural texture shine and air-dry your hair, you can take a break from heat styling during summer,” he explains. “Comb the hair in the shower with a wet brush or wide-toothed comb, then apply an oil, texture spray, or curl cream while the hair is soaking wet. Once dry, gently separate the strands with your fingers.”
Altogether, styling takes seconds but uses conditioning and lightly sculpting products to reduce frizz and create an effortless effect. “The deliberately ‘undone’ finish means that this style works with the hair, rather than against it,” Elliott adds.
2. The Layered Midi

“Low-maintenance” doesn’t necessarily mean short, as Rodger notes. Take the layered mid-length cut, for example. Typically sitting between the collarbone and shoulders, it’s known as one of the most versatile options for any age.
“Here, long, soft layers are introduced throughout the cut to remove bulk without sacrificing length,” observes Rodger. “This works well for mature women as it lifts the overall shape of the haircut, encourages natural movement, and prevents the hair from looking heavy or flat around the face.” However, he warns that a common mistake made with the layered midi is keeping all of the hair at one length, which can drag facial features downward. Gentle face-framing layers will instead keep the look “fresh and flattering,” he says.

According to Elliott, the beauty of this cut is that enough length is maintained to allow for various styling options—such as loose waves, soft updos, or “tucked-behind-the-ear looks,” but with the ease of slightly shorter hair. “It also grows out well, meaning that fewer regular trims are needed to maintain the shape.”
3. The Soft Bixie

The ’90s-inspired “bixie” has circled back as one of the most popular short hair trends of the year so far. Striking a balance between the softness of a bob and the ease of a cropped pixie cut, Rodger says it’s a great option for mature women with thin hair and is best achieved by keeping length around the crown while tapering the neckline and sides.
“As it creates softness around the face, it adds movement and volume, which can be beneficial as the hair naturally becomes finer over time,” he explains. “Styling requires little more than a texturising cream or a quick blow-dry, but I would avoid cutting it too short or severely, as the slightly grown-out effect is what keeps the bixie looking current and wearable.”
4. The Curved Bob

As seen on Julianne Moore, the curved bob often sits around (or just below) the jawline. Rodger highlights how, again, subtle internal layering allows the shape to softly curve toward the face.
“This is one of the chicest low-maintenance cuts because the haircut does most of the work; the shape naturally falls into place, making it easy to wear both polished and slightly undone,” he shares.
Rodger adds that by framing the cheekbones and jawline, attention is drawn away from the roots, giving the illusion of fullness through the sides. “But try not to make the perimeter too blunt or heavy, as an airy effect around the edges makes it look effortless,” he says.
5. Long Layers

This year’s Met Gala made a strong case for longer, waist-grazing hair on mature women, with Nicole Kidman leading the way in sleek, layered lengths. “Similar styles worn by Goldie Hawn and Victoria Beckham show that long hair can be surprisingly practical in warm weather, as well as easy to tie back,” Trinder comments.

Looks like these can make use of “well-placed” colour to further embrace the “quiet luxury” movement that celebrates pared-back elegance and modern simplicity. Trinder suggests opting for babylights, or ultrafine, delicate highlights woven throughout to soften the length and brighten the overall style.
“Keep the layers long and add lighter pieces to create shape and definition,” he recommends. Although this might require a more intense salon appointment, the results will be well worth it for a seamless, sun-kissed effect during summer.
