Double bun glam takes over the Dior Pre-Fall 2023 show

The two-chignon hairstyle, once seen in the sci-fi franchise 'Star Wars', is now quite the pop-culture staple.

Harper's Bazaar India

On Thursday night, luxury giant Dior turned Mumbai’s Gateway of India into a runway to present its Pre-Fall 2023 collection. The show will go down in history as one of the most iconic moments in Indian fashion. It was a beautiful amalgamation of Dior’s creativity and the craftsmanship of artisans at the Chanakya School of Craft.

Set against a breathtaking backdrop, models clad in soft, feminine, and timeless silhouettes walked down the runway representing India in all its grandeur. While they made for a stunning look in everything from oriental prints and sequins to floral motifs and skirts inspired by the sari, the hairstyle that the models sported also caught attention. They wore their hair in sleek soft waves at the front and mini double buns at the back. It was chic, functional, and on point for the hot season.

A little history to it

Double buns (also called space buns) have been seen on Dior’s runways before and they have an interesting history to them. Cinematically, you may recall the hairstyle in the Star Wars franchise with Carrie Fisher’s iconic character, Princess Leia wearing two perfect cinnamon buns. Star Wars director George Lucas wanted a hairstyle that represented the strength Fisher’s character stood for. So, he turned to strong women who battled colonial invasion for inspiration to create Leia’s aesthetic. Thus the term, space buns.

The darling of pop culture, too

Ever since the release of the sci-fi fantasy in 1977, double buns have been hot on the style charts. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus have sported the look to music festivals and on the red carpet. Jennifer Aniston dressed up as Princess Leia in the sitcom FRIENDS, Mel B a.k.a Scary Spice from Spice Girls made it her staple look, and in recent times, we’ve seen it on Lily Iglehart from the show Sex Education.

How to get the look

The buns are ideal in the scorching summer heat and also apt when you want a no-fuss style. Here’s how to get the look in a few minutes.

Step 1: Divide your hair in the centre using a comb or even just your fingers.

Step 2: One by one, pull the sections away from your face and twist them tightly to ensure all flyaways and shorter layers are secured.

Step 3: Wrap each section into a low bun and tie it tightly to ensure it doesn’t move. Use bobby pins to further secure your bun.

Step 4 (optional): Set this hairstyle with some hairspray. This way, your buns will not give up on you in the middle of the day.
