Your waist is the next frontier for accessorising

The latest way to finish an outfit is to put the focus where you least expect it.

For years, fashion's focus has been on what we carry on our shoulders, what we wear around our necks, or what we stack on our wrists, but the conversation seems to be moving south now, and the waist is finally getting its full-blown moment.

Statement belts have returned in a big way for 2026, with designers and stylists treating them less like functional wardrobe staples and more like jewellery. Oversized buckles, chain belts, embellished styles, and layered belts are all finding their way into the mix, adding shape and personality to otherwise familiar outfits.

Waist adornment can change an outfit's proportions with little effort, whether it is a sculptural belt cinching a fluid dress or a fine chain catching the light over a pair of trousers. And while the current versions have plenty of contemporary appeal, the idea itself is hardly new. In India, the kamarbandh has long been used to accentuate the waist and add another layer of ornamentation to a saree or lehenga. Today, that same instinct is appearing in more relaxed forms, in India and across the globe, from minimal waist chains to decorative pieces worn with denim and dresses.

This is your cue to dress the waist

The appeal of these pieces lies in their versatility. A waist chain can bring a subtle glint to an otherwise pared-back look, while a bold belt can give an oversized blazer, long dress, or pair of trousers a sharper silhouette. A scarf, which was thus far restricted to the head and neck, has now found its way down to the waist too. There is also a growing appetite for pieces that feel more personal than generic. Street style has seen charms, tassels, keychains, and other small objects hanging from belt loops and waistlines, extending the accessory obsession into something more playful.

You can keep things sleek with a slim metallic chain, bring in a little nostalgia with a Y2K-inspired belt, or lean into Indian jewellery traditions with a contemporary kamarbandh. The trick is to let the pieces work with the outfit rather than be the centre of attraction. Ironically, the best accessories are the ones that make a familiar look feel fresh and slightly different.
