What to wear when it’s too hot to wear clothes

From breezy linen tops and poplin pants to woven footwear that will keep you stylishly cool

Harper's Bazaar India

It may be the early days of summer, but temperatures across the country have already hit triple digits. Heatwaves are becoming a regular occurrence this season, and figuring out how to dress for them is more important than ever. So what do you wear when it feels like you’re standing just a few steps away from the sun?

“One of my rules for dressing during a heatwave is to prioritise breathability and comfort without sacrificing style,” says celebrity stylist Erin Walsh. “Embrace loose, flowing silhouettes that move with you and evoke effortlessness.”

In the cases of extreme heat, fabric is essential. “I always recommend checking the label for cotton,” says Walsh. “I’m a big fan because it’s super breathable, lightweight, and soft, making it the most comfortable choice for staying cool. Plus, it’s incredibly versatile and likely already in your wardrobe.” While it can be tempting to empty out your entire wardrobe and fill it with bags of ice, styles made from soft cotton, cooling linen, and moisture-wicking bamboo fabric will not only help with regulating your body heat but also provide some protection against the sun’s rays. (Of course, you should limit extended sun exposure and apply sunscreen.)

Another benefit of natural fibres is that they are better for you and the planet. “I always prefer natural fibres over synthetics—not just for staying cool, but also for a more sustainable option,” says Walsh. “Natural fibres are more durable and don’t contribute to microplastic pollution, which is definitely worth considering.” Below, we share our top heatwave wardrobe essentials, along with styling tips from Walsh, for when it’s too hot to wear clothes (but you have to).

Breezy Tops

Let’s start at the top, since that’s the place where your skin is likely to have the most contact with the sun’s heat. “I love styling a cropped white cotton tee from the Gap with a cotton maxi skirt for a laid-back and breezy look,” says Walsh. Breezy cotton T-shirts and loose linen button-ups will be key in keeping you from turning into a pool of sweat.

Loose Bottoms

Big bottoms have been trending for some time now, and those generously sized silhouettes are more welcome now than ever. Crisp poplin pants, dainty little bloomers, and tailored bermuda shorts will give you the coverage and breathability you need, whether you’re commuting into the office or en route to the beach.

One-and-Done Dresses

“What’s not to love about an oversized cotton shirt dress?” asks Walsh. When the temperature has reached the point of posing a potential health risk, wearing as few articles of clothing as possible is going to be your best bet. Below, our favourite one-and-done styles are made from cooling natural fabrics.

Versatile Skirts

If the heatwave can’t stop your desire to mix and match, you can’t go wrong with a flowy skirt. A-line, flared, and bubble-hem styles are perfect for beating the heat and look just as good with a tailored tank top and flip-flops as they do with a loose blouse and kitten heels.

Breathable Footwear

This season, there’s no shortage of stylish footwear that is primed for high heat. Mesh, jelly, and raffia styles are proven to keep you extra cool while trekking on city streets or beach boardwalks.
