Trends that were everywhere at the 2023 Met gala

Our rundown on the fantastical trends from the Met Gala

Harper's Bazaar India

The Met gala just happened and we have never been more starstruck. The red carpet was graced by several global A-listers like Gigi Hadid, Kim Kardashian, and Alia Bhatt all looking absolutely breathtaking in their beautiful and intricate outfits.

Creativity ran amok on the red carpet with celebrities being dressed up in their interpretation of the legacy of Karl Lagerfeld. Jared Leto and Doja Cat even dressed up as Karl's beloved cat, Choupette. As would be only natural for us following the gala closely, here's a roundup of all the trends that emerged out of the Met.

Monochrome

The Met gala red carpet looked like a scene from a French noir movie with so many attendees coming all dressed up in black and white. Michelle Yeoh stunned everyone in her black and white tuxedo-inspired gown paired with a beautiful diamond necklace. Ex Karl Lagerfeld muse, Devon Aoki too looked breathtaking in a black and white mermaid dress. Priyanka Chopra also looked ravishing in her black and white gown.

Precious pearls

Usually, you wear your pearls as a necklace or earring, but at the met gala the pearls are the outfit. Kim Kardashian who everyone thought was uninvited to the met gala made quite an entrance on the red carpet with a dress made of strings of pearls. Conan Grey masterfully blended the masculine tuxedo with a pearl-studded waistcoat. Bollywood superstar Alia Bhatt too made her debut at the met gala dressed in a stunning pearl-embedded dress from Prabal Gurung.

Tailored tweed

Whenever you think of Mr Lagerfeld, tweed is always the first thing that might come to your mind, so it is no surprise that a lot of celebrities wore tweed to the Gala. What really stuck out to us was the way tweed was worn. Anne Hathway wore a tweed gown which showed off her bodyline and even had gold safety pin embellishments. Jenna Ortega in true Wednesday fashion wore a black tuxedo tweed gown with gold chains all over. Dua Lipa too wore a gorgeous vintage channel tweed gown.

Gallant gloves

Gloves were quite the fan favourite this Met gala season with many A-listers wearing them. K-pop star Jennie Kim as well as superstar Jennifer Lopez accessorised their outfit with a pair of black elbow-high gloves. Fingerless gloves (which were something Karl Lagerfeld religiously wore) were also a very big hit at the met with Lizzo as well as Alia Bhatt wearing them.

Radiant roses

Roses too were flourishing on the red carpet. Many celebrities wore roses in order to honor Mr Lagerfeld, they wore a very specific kind of rose in their outfits called the Lagerfeld rose. Rihanna wore a white cover full of roses, Cardi B had her skirt embellished with roses, Diddy wore a black robe full of fabric roses, Bad Bunny too, had a whole train of white fabric roses trailing behind him as we walked the red carpet.

Luxurious leather

Leather too was a favourite of Karl Lagerfeld and thus it was also a favourite at the Met gala with Paris Hilton as well as Lily James wearing leather gowns. Many celebrities also used leather accessories in their outfits like Aubrey Plaza.
