How to style the summer-favourite denim maxi skirt for autumn

Make the most of this versatile piece of clothing.

Harper's Bazaar India

Earlier this year, the denim maxi skirt was one of spring and summer season’s hottest items to don. Its popularity is not a surprise given Y2K-era fashion is seeing a resurgence. While the skirt was typically paired with garish long-sleeved t-shirts, cardigans, and OTT chunky belts then, its comeback is marked by button-up pairings and crop-top combos, something we can get behind.

And if you thought that the skirt is only fit for the hotter months, think again. It is touted to reign supreme even as we go into fall, in part due to its versatility and ease. Make it the statement item in your autumn wardrobe by pairing it with a variety of white tees, button-ups, and sweater vests on rotation for an outfit that is every bit as elegant as it is trendy.

If you’re looking for inspiration, we give some ideas that will get you on the fall denim maxi skirt bandwagon, stat.

Go for the denim-on-denim look

Long gone are the days when denim on denim was considered a big faux pas, today you’ll find the look ruling both on and off the runway. To hop onto the trend, either pair your denim maxi skirt with a structured denim jacket—bonus points if it has a belt to define your curves—or go for an oversized denim shirt and use a black belt and a matching cross-body or bucket bag for a simple, effortless day look.

Pair it with a crisp button-up and Mary Janes

The shirt and long skirt pairing is a classic, and for good reason—we saw Akshata Murty ace the look during her G20 Summit visit to India recently. Wear your favourite denim maxi skirt with a crisp button-up; you could stick with white or even opt for a monotone striped shirt. Add Mary Janes and a shoulder bag, and you’re good to go.

Plain white tee and blazer combo never goes out of style

While the plain white tee and denim maxi skirt combo is a summer staple, make it fall-appropriate by wearing a chic blazer on top. The trick is ideal for this season as it gives you the flexibility to remove the blazer if it gets too hot during the day! Pick a black blazer and add glam with plenty of rings and layered necklaces. Add a baguette or moon bag to round off the outfit.

Dress it up with a ‘going-out’ top

Who said you could wear denim only for casual occasions? We love the fact that a denim maxi skirt is versatile enough to dress up or down, depending on where you’re headed. And if a girl’s night out is on your mind, then wear your skirt with your go-to ‘going-out’ top—it could be a sheer full-sleeved top worn over a sexy bra or a silk tube top. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to complete the look with the right accessories—silver hoops and rings along with a strappy pair of sparkly heels would go perfectly with the look, we think.

Wear a sweater vest or slouchy sweater for colder days

A sweater vest seems like it was made for the transitional season—you can wear it with or without a tee (or a sheer top for extra glam) underneath and still exude a cosy vibe. Pick one in a neutral shade like beige or ivory or go all out with a warm shade like rust (apt for the season!). For those days when it feels more like winter than autumn, bring out your favourite, slouchiest sweater that feels like a warm hug and wear it tucked in with the denim maxi skirt and a pair of boots.
