“Hiya Barbie.”
“Hi Ken!”
When the first teaser of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, was released, it introduced us to the world of Barbie, played by Oscar nominee Margot Robbie, along with her boy-toy Ken, played by Ryan Gosling. It was everything pink, dreamy, and some more pink. Last night, when the second trailer of the film was released, it’s safe to say that it broke the internet. Here’s why. The minute-long trailer not only gave us a glimpse into the storyline of the film, but also made it evidently clear that it’s a whole Barbieverse and not just another Barbie movie! Screenwriter, actor, and director, Greta Gerwig has truly embodied the term ‘star-studded’ in this film’s casting and created an ensemble of Hollywood’s best(est).
Besides starring the stunning Margot Robbie and the ever-charming Ryan Gosling, the film will also include a mermaid Barbie played by Dua Lipa (she has aquamarine hair that looks super-chic), along with the Barbie that has a Nobel Prize played by Sex Education star, Emma Mackey and the Barbie who is a doctor, played by You actor, Hari Nef. Others, include Bridgerton actor Nicola Coughlan as the Barbie who is a diplomat, Ritu Arya who plays a Pulitzer-winning Barbie and Alexandra Shipp as the Barbie who's a celebrated author. Of course, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans Simu Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa are all set to play different iterations of the Ken doll. The trailer transported us to an idyllic dream world, with super-cute outfits and picture-perfect sets.
Several members of the star cast took to Instagram to announce the Barbie that they would be playing—and it really couldn’t get more huge than this.
The second half of the trailer brought with it a huge revelation. Turns out that Barbie and Ken will be placed in the real, not-so-plastic world, where the duo will be forced to navigate the challenges and situations that come with not being dolls anymore. In the human world, we’re introduced to a different cast altogether with Will Ferell as the CEO of Mattel, British actor Helen Mirren as the narrator, The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants star America Ferrera, as a fellow human and emerging American actor, Arianna Greenblatt.
Exciting it sure is, and we can hardly wait for the film to release on July 20, 2023. Barbie has been co-produced by Mattel Films, Heydey Films, Robbie and her husband Tom Ackerly’s, LuckyChap Entertainment.
