Nothing feels better than watching the sun after days of gloom. That feeling of happiness and joy is exactly what spring is all about. Everything in this time feels good, right from the blooming flowers, and trees looking greener, to the chirping of the birds making you feel warmer, lighter, and happier. One can feel this warm and fuzzy feeling watching films that showcase the season at its best with breathtaking visuals that signify fresh starts and new beginnings as well.

We’ve rounded up a list of seven movies about spring that you need to watch right now.

The Sound of Music (1965)

Do you ever feel like making a trip to the hills, twirling amongst the flora, and singing your heart out? If you haven’t, then this classic from the 60s will certainly make you want to enjoy the beauty and warmth of spring at its very best. Watching Julie Andrews, frolicking in those snow-capped hills with beautiful flowers in Austria is a sight that will make you long for the advent of spring. This Oscar-winning film is based on the story of the Trapp Family singers, one of the best-known concert groups before the Second World War, and focuses on Maria, a governess to a naval officer’s seven children, who ends up falling in love with him. Right from the floral-decorated hills to the picnics with the children that gave us an iconic soundtrack, The Sound of Music will forever be a symbol of spring.

Notting Hill (1999)

We have all had a crush on celebrities and dreamt of building a life with them. And watching Notting Hill is like seeing our dreams turn into someone else’s reality. The fairy-tale-like film revolves around the romance between Will, a struggling bookshop owner (Hugh Grant), and Anna, a famous Hollywood celebrity (Julia Roberts). Despite being shot in London, that is known for its unpredictable weather, the movie is filled with some gorgeous springtime park scenes. This includes the Rosemead Gardens that Will and Anna trespass (where Grant utters the cute ‘whoopsie daisies’ line), and the Hampstead Heath, where Anna shoots a Henry James' period piece.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)

The movie adaptation of Jane Austen’s romance novel will take absolutely no time to see audiences (you included) embrace themselves in the warm embrace of spring. Such is the stunning cinematography as you watch Keira Knightley strolling through the English countryside as gold light falls all around paints spring at its very best. And if that wasn’t enough, watching Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) looking charming as ever on horseback was just the finishing touch required. While she starts by hating Mr. Darcy for his rudeness, the connection between the two surprisingly seems to grow, despite both of them being reluctant. Filmed in the English countryside, the film is packed with the greenery one associates with spring, a clean fresh environment, and sunrises and white costumes that symbolise purity and a new beginning.

Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

With spring being all about ‘rebirth’, this list of movies would be incomplete if we didn’t include one of Julia Roberts’ best performances. Based on the 2006 memoir of the same name, it revolves around the life of Liz, a woman who travels across the globe (Italy, India and Bali) to rediscover and remind herself of the things that matter, what to let go and how to step out of one’s comfort zone. While on one point we see her enjoy and experience local cuisine, and culture it’s the springtime imagery and floral landscapes that is a symbol of the growth and strides that Liz makes as she blooms into a new and better person.

Spring Breakers (2012)

Spring’s all about having fun in the sun and this film is an accurate portrayal of the party lifestyle that college kids have during their spring break. Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine co-star in Harmony Korine’s crime comedy about four women who want to get out of the coldness of studies and education and bask in the warmth of Florida’s spring scene in their bikinis and swimming trunks. They start off by robbing a diner to fund their trip and find themselves stuck in a life of crime after a drug dealer bails them out of jail. With everyone having one eye on embarking on a much-needed spring break with their besties, here’s a film that reminds one that things can take a dark turn that’s filled with consequences.

Hope Springs (2012)

Renewal and new starts is what spring represents and that’s what this romantic comedy is all about. Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones co-star in this film about a married couple whose sex life is non-existent. Looking to save their relationship and improve their intimacy in between the sheets, the pair rediscovers their passion for each other after a series of therapy sessions (Steve Carell plays a marriage counsellor) and realise that the real challenge is reigniting the spark that originally brought them together.

La La Land (2016)

Despite it not having a happy and sappy ending, the film starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone still evokes the warm and fuzzy feelings that we associate with spring. And that’s thanks to its many dance numbers in the middle of the bustling Los Angeles traffic, watching the lead duo walk hand in hand, along with the picturesque and colourful imagery. Watching Seb (Gosling) fall in love with Mia (Stone) and seeing these star-crossed lovers begin to fall apart was truly gut-wrenching but one simply couldn’t take the

ir eyes off the vibrant shades of costumes worn by the duo, especially Stone. Even though the film tracks the characters through every season, it’s the beautiful spring colour scheme that leaves a lasting impression making us want to watch this cinematic masterpiece yet another time, despite knowing exactly how things end.
