The wait is finally over for avid cinephiles as we are one step closer to knowing who scooped the top honours at the 97th Academy Awards with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally announcing the much-awaited Oscar nominations. Having been delayed due to the wildfires in Los Angeles, the nominations were finally announced last night by actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang in a live-stream. Set to take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre, the Oscars will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.

Leading the pack is Emila Pérez, a crime musical, with a total of 13 nominations, an achievement that’s just one shy of the overall record for nominations from a single film that is currently shared by Titanic, All About Eve, and La La Land. Not far behind were The Brutalist and Wicked, with 10 nominations each. The trio was amongst the 10 films nominated for the Best Picture Award, where they’re joined by the likes of A Complete UnknownConclaveAnoraDune: Part TwoNickel Boys, and I'm Still Here. With Wicked and Emilia Pérez, this year marks the first time two musicals have been nominated in the Best Picture category since 1968 when Oliver! and Funny Girl both scored nominations.

Actress Karla Sofía Gascón, playing the titular role, made Oscar history by being the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category. She joins a list that also includes Cynthia Erivo, from 'Wicked,' and Demi Moore for her performance in the bloody body horror hit The Substance.
