Every now and then, you hear of a new skincare ingredient that pops up out of nowhere and suddenly takes over. Like a GenZ pop star. But unlike most pop stars, these skincare ingredients aren’t one-hit wonders. They consistently deliver results and leave you in awe of their work. This of hyaluronic acid, for instance. No one knew what it did, what products it was in or even how to pronounce the word. But now, it’s a skincare A-lister. Found on the beauty shelves in most homes. But we aren’t here to talk about hyaluronic acid. We’re here to talk about an up-and-coming ingredient that is creating quite the buzz in the beauty universe—Ecotin.
If you haven’t heard of it yet, don’t worry you’re not the only one. While Ecotin has been around for decades it is only recently made its way into skincare formulas and it is proving its mettle. All it needs is Hyaluronic acid's publicist.
What is Ecotin?
Here is where we have to get a little technical. If you paid attention in your 8th-grade biology class, you already know a little something about amino acids. And if you’re a beauty junkie then you know about their role in skincare. Peptides, for example, are short-chained amino acids that pack mighty power. And Ecotin is a type of peptide found in and derived from several types of bacteria (the good kind).
Ecotin serves as an osmolyte—which means it’s a mixture of molecules whose job it is to maintain the integrity of cells. Specifically, Ecotin is an extremolyte. It helps protect cellular integrity in extreme weather conditions. Think of Ecotin as a bodyguard for our cells. It can protect the cell membranes from any chemical or physical damage as well as decrease inflammation.
Benefits of Ecotin
To protect the cells from various stressors, Ecotin attracts water molecules to itself to form a hydro-complex. This sits on the layer of the skin and forms a protective hydration shell around it. This preserves the moisture balance within and prevents transepidermal water loss. Besides being so deeply hydrating, ecotin also restores barrier function. And unlike hyaluronic acid which is eventually destroyed by hyaluronidase (an enzyme in the skin), Ecotin is not easily broken down. Which means it can provide your skin with long-term hydration.
Another star quality of Ecotin that makes it such an asset to your skin is its ability to fight off environmental stressors. Think—pollution, UVA and UVB rays. No, we’re not saying Ecotin is a substitute for your trusted sunscreen but can protect the skin from the damage caused by harsh sunlight.
It soothes the skin, protects the barrier and provides long-term hydration. But when we said Ecotin was an all-rounder, we meant it. This ingredient also has potent anti-inflammatory properties which reduce fine lines and wrinkles (making it a good anti-ageing agent) as well as work on pigmentation by suppressing tyrosinase which is the enzyme responsible for the first step in melanin production. Talk about being an overachiever.
How can you incorporate Ecotin into your skincare routine?
If you had a good impression of Ecotin until now, just wait. It’s going to get so much better. Not only can Ecotin be used on multiple skin types (dry and sensitive is ideal though) it also plays well with almost all skincare formulas and even enhances the strength of other ingredients that share its qualities. From hyaluronic acid (no, they are not competitors) to barrier-building ceramides, Ecotin is always happy to lend a hand. On the other hand, it also works hard to minimise the negative impact of some harsher ingredients like AHAs, BHAs or retinoids. If you ever over-exfoliate, it’s Ecotin to the rIt soothes the inflammation and redness caused by them and reduces their side effects.
