The King of Fruits has made its way to Mumbai’s local markets, onto our dining tables, and on the menu of bakeries and restaurants across the city. From Thai sticky mango rice to delectable mango doughnuts, there’s something for everyone to tuck into. Check out six mango-based desserts we can’t wait to try.
Mangoes and Cream doughnuts—Toast Doughnut Shop
Toast Doughnut Shop, run by chef Devika Manjrekar (who’s also the brainchild behind the Italian restaurant Toast Pasta bar), is known for its cloud-like brioche doughnuts that are generously stuffed with an array of delicious fillings like jam and custard, praline custard, chocolate ganache, and more. The cafe is known for changing their flavours as per the season and for the summer, they have a mangoes and cream variant filled with mango-flavoured custard and dotted with mango chunks. Summer in a bite, we say!
Summer Lovin’ Mango Pistachio Tango—Love Crummbs
If you’ve been looking through social media feeds of late, you’re sure to have seen the famous pinwheel croissant from NYC that made its way to Mumbai, thanks to Love Crummbs. The sweet arm of the celeb-favourite Love Fools restaurant in Bandra, this bakery is known for their irresistible laminated offerings that are as Instagrammable as it gets! Think inverted croissants, raspberry namelaka, hot chocolate danishes, and of course, round croissants. This is season, get set for a special mango dish called Summer Lovin’ Pistachio Tango. It features crisp, flaky puff pastry enclosing pistachio cream, topped with a mountain of fresh mangoes and a dusting of icing sugar.
Mango sticky rice—Seefah
Seefah, the popular Asian restaurant in Bandra by chef couple Seefah Ketchaiyo and Karan Bane, serves up a delicious mix of Thai and Japanese fare. Come mango season, you’ll spot the indulgent mango sticky rice on the menu, where orange-hued juicy Alphonso mango slices are paired with Thai coconut milk and sticky rice and garnished with a smattering of crunchy moong dal, and mint leaves.
Mini Mango Cream Cake—Le 15
Le 15 Patisserie, by renowned pastry chef Pooja Dhingra, may be well known for its wide range of macarons, but its cakes are just as delectable. Every year when mangoes make their appearance in the market, the menu at the bakery sees additions that are inspired by the fruit. A must-try are the Mango Cream Cake, along with its mini version. The dessert features an airy genoise sponge layered with decadent pastry cream and chopped fresh mangoes, garnished with more mangoes, chopped pistachios, and a mini sea-salt macaron.
Sunshine, House of Amel
The Colaba-based patisserie, which is known for its range of croissants, entremets, cakes, and more, has two special mango desserts on the menu. The first, called Sunshine, is an elaborate dessert that features fresh mangoes and a moist vanilla sponge along with coconut, making it the perfect tropical dessert that will transport you straight to a beach vacation! If a buttery tart is more to your liking, then give the Spring a try—it has a shortbread base and is filled with mango confiture, mango mousse and fresh mangoes. Overload of deliciousness!
Mango French Toast, Bastian
Bastian, the celebrity-frequented restaurant grabs attention for its extensive brunch menu full of indulgences. Last year, they had a decadent mango pull-me-up cake, and this year they have rolled out their popular Mango French Toast, which features a thick slice of crisp French toast topped with whipped cream, fresh mango chunks, mango pulp, and more.
