Leather is the hottest fabric this season—here’s how to add it to your wardrobe

There’s more to it than just a jacket.

Harper's Bazaar India

Every year when the weather gets a little chilly, out come our cosy cardigans, our favourite over-sized hoodies, and one leather jacket that we’ve owned since forever that goes with everything. Wearing leather outfits is the easiest way to look chic without putting in too much effort. Wearing a plain tee and denims? Throw a leather coat over it and you’ve got yourself the perfect casual look. Want to take your outfit to the next level for a dinner date? A leather mini skirt will do the trick. The fabric is versatile, looks amazing, and keeps you insulated from all the cold drafts—a true all-rounder.

Below, discover how you can add it to your wardrobe this season.

Leather skirts are the ‘it’ thing this season—even Taylor Swift employed the use of a black leather mini skirt to elevate her date night look recently. You can go the mini route, or even pick a midi or maxi skirt with a slit for a look that is both sophisticated and sexy. Choose the monochrome look by pairing it with a blazer and boots in the same shade—we love a chocolate-brown aesthetic, like Hailey Bieber’s recent trending latte look for Kim Kardashian’s birthday.

Leather trench coat

While the leather trench coat might seem too OTT for some, it’s shaping up to be one of the hottest items to don this season. To avoid the abundance of leather wearing you down, we suggest keeping it casual by pairing it with cargo pants, sneakers, and a cosy sweater. If you are willing to experiment and feel that more is more, then lean into the leather aesthetic by pairing it with knee-high leather boots and finishing it with a pair of sleek black shades to look like you’ve just stepped out of The Matrix, in a good way.

Leather pants

A pair of figure-hugging, skin-tight leather pants have always been a classic, but with the era of the skinny jeans gone, the silhouette of leather pants has also seen a transformation, with more relaxed, wide-leg fits available now. Wear it with a white shirt and ballet flats for a stylish office look, or dress them up with a matching bustier and strappy heels for your Friday night plans. And who said you can’t tone down leather pants for a more casual vibe? Wear your loose, straight-fit leather pants with a tee, sneakers, and a baseball cap for a put-together street style look.

Leather jacket

Of course, a guide on styling leather won’t be complete without mentioning the piece that has become a fall and winter staple over the years. If you are going to add only one leather item to your wardrobe, let it be this. Leather jackets are suave and extremely versatile, meaning they’ll add an extra bit of flair to any outfit. Slip it over a slinky dress to stay warm and look chic on a night out, or combine it with a white tee, denims, and black platform loafers for a classic look.

While a leather top might be too much of a commitment, a leather crop top or bralette is perfect for enjoying the sophisticated look without it being impractical or daunting. Naturally, it will go effortlessly with leather pants for a co-ord set vibe. Alternatively, experiment with different textures and fabrics by pairing the bralette with pleated maxi skirt or trousers. Throw a coat over the outfit, slip into leather boots, and you’re good to go.
