The first big heat wave of the summer has landed, and Bermuda shorts are the key to staying cool in style. Somewhere between a traditional short and a pant, Bermudas offer more coverage than briefs but are far more breathable than jeans. In, well, short, they’re the perfect piece to have on hand when you crave flexibility and cooling comfort.
The classic silhouette is trending this summer, but it's notoriously tricky to style. The trick, I think, is to keep things simple. Below, I’ll share three of my favorite Bermuda shorts outfits. I’ve also shopped out an additional 15 styles from favorite brands like Ralph Lauren and Still Here to help you fill out your wardrobe for the season ahead.
Black and White
When in doubt—or in a rush—you can always fall back on a black-and-white look. The classic contrast looks sharp without much effort and is great for the office or a weekend day trip. I’ve previously written about my love for Leset’s Ariella City Short, a breezy yet polished Bermuda short cut from Japanese crepe. They look just as good with a flowy tunic as they do with a cropped T-shirt layered underneath a lightweight knit, like Uniqlo’s UV protective cardigan. Added bonus: They’re wrinkle-resistant and pack well. If you’re looking for a short that can work and play at home or out of town, this is it.
Head-to-Toe Monochrome
All-white outfits are heating up this summer. There’s something undeniably chic about a fully monochromatic look, and Posse’s linen Marchello shorts make the perfect base. With pleats at the front and an elasticised waistband ensuring a tailored fit, they’re at once elegant and practical for the intense heat. I’ve been wearing them with oversized linen button-ups and Leset’s Margo T-shirt (an HBZ editor favourite). To add a little contrast and define the waist, I’ll add a black leather belt and beaded jewellery for an easy pop of colour.
With a Pastel
Looking to lean into colour this summer? Why not start with one of the biggest pastel colour trends, pistachio green? (Butter yellow or blush pink will also work.) The creamy shade softens the more striking Bermuda silhouette while adding some vibrancy to the overall look. Cou Cou Intimates recently launched a cotton voile collection, and the standout piece is definitely the Bermuda shorts. Light as a feather with delicate lace trim, they’re quickly becoming my go-to bottoms for days when it’s too hot to wear clothes. Pair with an oversized shirt and fun jelly slides for what will soon be your go-to heatwave look.
