History being made at the Golden Globes
The gala evening was marked by some very special and heartfelt moments. When Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the groundbreaking FX series Pose, got on stage to accept an award, he asked the audience to recognise Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who formerly went by Mj Rodriguez, with a standing ovation, as the 2022 Golden Globes were not televised. Rodriguez made history last year as the first trans actor to win a Golden Globe, when she was named 'Best Actress in a TV Drama'. The Newark actor played Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the series.

Predictions we had made for the 2023 Golden Globes (January 10, 2023)
The Golden Globes are back (a year after it was pulled from its TV spot due to protests over the organisation’s lack of diversity), and there’s much more excitement about this much-awaited award show of the year. We, in India, are all set for a wonderful Wednesday morning, as all roads in California will lead to The Beverly Hilton for that one day.
If you’re wondering which of the big-wigs are fighting it out for top honours along with the host and presenters for the night, worry not, we bring you the dish.
So, who’s going to win the award for Motion Picture (Drama)?
It’s a power-packed list that includes Avatar: The Way of Water, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tár, and Top Gun: Maverick. This is an extremely tough one to pick and we certainly wouldn’t want to be the ones deciding who wins. But, considering the Golden Globes’ fascination for all things music and biopics, don’t be surprised to see Elvis win. At the same time, don’t discount Tár for they could spring a surprise. And with the big-budget Avatar and Top Gun leaving each one of us in awe, we shall be right at the edge of our seats waiting to see who wins.
What about Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)?
I really want The Banshees of Inisherin to win it. Personal bias aside, this category has a total of eight nominations, and the rest of the list includes Babylon, Everything Everywhere All at Once (this could be a surprise winner), Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and the Triangle of Sadness.
And the Best Actor and Actress for Motion Picture (Drama)
If a film about the King of rock and roll is the prime candidate to bag the award for Best Picture (Drama), don’t be surprised that Austin Butler, who plays the central character in Elvis, is expected to win the award for Best Actor (Drama). The rest of the nomination list includes Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Hugh Jackman (The Son—a movie you should not miss), Bill Nighy (Living), and Jeremy Pope (The Inspection).
As far as the ladies go, we’d be shocked should Cate Blanchett not win it for her more than impressive performance in (Tár). But this category, over the past few years, has always brought out a few surprises, so you could also see Ana de Armas (Blonde), Olivia Colman (Empire of Light), Viola Davis (The Woman King), Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) walk up the stage to collect the award.
All eyes on RRR
This movie is the primary reason why the entire Indian nation will be tuning in to watch the events unfold in California. Having broken box-office records for fun, S.S. Rajamouli’s RRR has been nominated across not one, but two categories—Original Song and Motion Picture (Non-English Language). While in the former, Naatu Naatu’s closest contenders are Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick and Lift Me Up from Black Panther, sung by Lady Gaga and Rihanna respectively, those challenging RRR for Motion Picture (Non-English Language) include All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany), Argentina, 1985 (Argentina), Close (Belgium), and Decision to Leave (South Korea).
Let’s talk TV
As far as the award for Best TV Series (Drama) goes, we expect House of the Dragon to scoop the award over Better Call Saul, The Crown, Ozark, and Severance. The TV Series (Comedy or Musical) category should see The Bear take the honour ahead of Abbott Elementary, Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, and Wednesday. The Bear, a show that made us love all things food and everything that takes place inside a restaurant should also see Jeremy Allen White win the award for TV Actor (Comedy or Musical). Having redefined goth fashion and how, Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) is everyone’s favourite to take home the TV Actress (Comedy or Musical) honour. With Bob Odenkirk being a cult figure in the world of TV shows, it looks like the presenters will surely be calling Saul for yet another iconic performance in Better Call Saul as he wins the TV Actor (Drama) award. That said, all eyes are surely going to be on Zendaya to see if she bags the TV Actress (Drama) award. Despite having Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Laura Linney (Ozark), Imelda Staunton (The Crown), Hilary Swank (Alaska Daily) in what is certainly a star-studded list, expect nothing but Euphoria on the stage as the actor and singer gives her acceptance speech.
A little bit about the presenters as well
You name it, the Golden Globes have it. Witness nothing but the crème de la crème of Hollywood in what should be a glamourous night. This star-studded list includes Ana De Armas, Ana Gasteyer, Billy Porter, Colman Domingo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Natasha Lyonne, Nicole Byer, Niecy Nash-Betts, Quentin Tarantino, Tracy Morgan, Claire Danes, Cole Hauser, Glen Powell, Harvey Guillen, Henry Golding, Hilary Swank, Jay Ellis, Jenna Ortega, Jennifer Coolidge, Jennifer Hudson, Letitia Wright, Mo Brings Plenty, Regina Hall, Salma Hayek Pinault, and more.
Who’s the host this time?
Stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael is your 2023 host. He starred in the semi-autobiographical sitcom The Carmichael Show and 2021 comedy-drama On the Count of Three.
