Everything you need to know about the 2024 Golden Globe Awards

Get ready for a Barbieheimer showdown in the motion picture category along with 'Succession' and 'The Bear' fighting it out in the TV category.

Harper's Bazaar India

It’s going to be a spectacular Sunday as the much-awaited 2024 Golden Globe Awards graces our screens, rewarding the very best of TV and Film that entertained fans over the past year. All roads in California will lead to The Beverly Hilton for what is set to be an epic award ceremony hosted by comedian and actor Jo Koy, as the best in showbiz dazzle on the red carpet.

If you’re wondering about the big-wigs fighting it out for top honours, fret not, we have all the deets.

Another 'Barbieheimer' showdown

Having set the box office on fire, all eyes are on yet another Barbieheimer epic clash to see who among the two, takes home the most number of awards. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie has earned a whopping nine nominations including Best Picture—Musical or Comedy, Director (Gerwig), Actress—Musical or Comedy (Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), and three nominations for Best Original Song for tunes by Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, and Gosling's I'm Just Ken.

That’s followed by Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer with eight nominations, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven nominations each.

So, who’s going to win the award for motion picture (drama)?

It’s a power-packed list that includes Anatomy of a Fall, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, Oppenheimer, Past Lives and The Zone of Interest. While prime contenders here include Killers of The Flower Moon and Oppenheimer, we think that the former—an epic Western crime drama film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro—might take home the award.

What about Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical)?

Barbie and Poor Things are contending for this award and it is the latter that should edge the Greta Gerwig film. Air, American Fiction, The Holdovers, and May December complete the rest of the nominations.

Two categories that are too close to call

There’s simply no front-runner in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture–Drama category. Not when you’ve got spectacular performances by Bradley Cooper in Maestro, Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon, and Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer going up against each other (with Colman Domingo in Rustin, Barry Keoghan for Saltburn and Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers) completing the list.

Another category that’s way too close to call is Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture–Musical or Comedy. It’s a three-way tussle between Margot Robbie for Barbie, Emma Stone in Poor Things and Natalie Portman for May December. We really can’t choose a winner here for these two.

Let’s talk TV

Coming to the shows, Succession leads the way with as many as 9 nominations. We fully expect the show to win The Best Television Series award with Sarah Snook (who played Shiv) taking home Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series–Drama. The show has 3 nominations in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series–Drama category (Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong) and we’d be really surprised if the winner isn’t one out of the three.

We loved the second season of The Bear and hope they win the Best Television Series—Musical or Comedy award along with Ayo Edebiri and Jeremy Allen White winning the best performance by a female and male actor respectively, in the musical or comedy category. The duo were all things spectacular!

If you're wondering where to watch it, Lionsgate Play will be streaming streaming the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Monday, January 8th at 6:30 AM
