We do it every January—set lofty New Year’s resolutions with the best intentions of becoming the healthiest, happiest versions of ourselves. You know the drill: eat more veggies, work out regularly, practice yoga every morning, and indulge in self-care over the weekend. Fast forward to mid-February, and those plans have either been postponed until "next Monday" or completely forgotten about. Between work, doom-scrolling on Instagram, and finding our next watch on Netflix, who has the time to fully commit to these wellness goals? Oftentimes, the very idea of self-care feels as exhausting as the act itself. So do you give up on self-care? Not exactly, you simply adopt a routine called “wellness pairing”.
A low-effort, multitasking trend that Gen Z has been experimenting with, wellness pairing makes staying healthy more of a lifestyle and less of a chore.
What exactly is this trend about?
Wellness pairing helps Gen Z and millennials stay healthy without overhauling their entire routine. This trend involves combining daily activities you enjoy with healthy habits, making self-care feel like a natural extension of your day. For example, exercising while rewatching your favourite sitcom or doing your skincare while FaceTiming a friend.
Wellness pairing gained traction on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, where creators shared how they were "stacking" wellness activities to make their routines more efficient and enjoyable. It taps into Gen Z's focus on multitasking and mental health, fitting self-care effortlessly into a busy lifestyle.
What makes wellness pairing even more appealing is its flexibility and ease. It doesn’t require hours at the gym, meal prepping every Sunday, or dedicating an entire day to relaxation. Instead, it’s about creating micro-moments throughout your day that add up to something bigger. Take a walk while brainstorming ideas for work, do a quick 10-minute stretch while waiting for your coffee to brew, or even practice mindfulness while responding to emails. These small adjustments, when paired with things you’re already doing, transform your daily routine into a series of opportunities for self-care, leaving you feeling healthier and more balanced without sacrificing your time.
Pairing mindfulness with physical activity creates a holistic approach to mental well-being. Dr Alisha Lalljee, psychologist and special educator, explains, “Mindfulness enhances the mind-body connection, helping individuals stay present and focused during exercise. This reduces stress and fosters a sense of calm and resilience.”
Psychologist Vedika Sukhatme adds, “Physical activity and mindfulness-based practices help regulate mood and stress by providing a steady flow of happy hormones like serotonin and boosting endorphin levels, alleviating anxiety and stress symptoms. Mindfulness promotes self-awareness and emotional regulation by helping a person stay present and non-judgmental. Done consistently, these practices offer a significant boost to mental health and well-being.”
Benefits of wellness pairing
One of the most immediate benefits of wellness pairing is stress reduction. Instead of overhauling your routine, you seamlessly integrate health into your lifestyle—no guilt for missing a workout or forgetting to meditate. This approach helps you stay consistent with your goals by making wellness a natural part of your day rather than an extra task. Over time, these small, healthy habits, like a morning stretch or a walk during a call, become second nature, making long-term health benefits easier to achieve.
Sohini Rohra, counselling psychologist and author, adds, “Cognitive behavioural techniques are great for shifting negative thought patterns, but pairing them with meditation adds a layer of calm and connection. Even small practices like journaling and expressing gratitude can help organise your thoughts and bring a sense of peace. It’s this balance between the rational and the spiritual that truly allows healing to happen.”
So how do you integrate wellness pairing into your daily routines?
Start small and simple
Begin with a couple of easy, enjoyable habits paired with your everyday tasks. No need to dive in all at once. If you’re already used to checking your phone first thing in the morning, why not add a quick stretch or a few deep breaths while you scroll? Or, if you listen to music while doing chores, try swapping it out for a calming podcast or guided meditation to combine relaxation with productivity. The goal is to introduce small wellness practices that feel manageable while bringing balance and calm to your day.
Pair wellness with your favourite activities
The beauty of this trend is how effortlessly it lets you combine your favourite activities with ones you usually avoid, like yoga or eating healthy. If you love cooking, use that time to experiment with healthier meals or practice mindfulness as you prep your ingredients. By associating wellness with activities you enjoy, you’re far more likely to stick with it consistently.
Create micro-moments of wellness
Wellness pairing is about finding little moments throughout your day for self-care. Whether it’s a 5-minute stretch while waiting for your coffee to brew or using your commute to unwind with a podcast, these micro-moments quickly add up. Over time, these small, intentional habits become part of your lifestyle. And the best part? You don’t need hours to make a difference. It’s about making in-between moments work for you rather than waiting for the perfect, uninterrupted time slot to prioritise your mental and physical health.
Be flexible and forgiving
Be flexible and forgiving with your wellness goals—remember, the aim is balance, not perfection. Life can get chaotic, and it’s okay if you don’t stick to your routine every day. Flexibility helps you stay consistent, and being kind to yourself ensures you don’t burn out. After all, wellness is about building sustainable habits, not stressing over occasional slip-ups.
