The Jane Austen renaissance continues. Sense and Sensibility is the next of the author's novels to head to the big screen—again.
Thirty years after Emma Thompson’s beloved adaptation of the 1811 novel hit cinemas, director Georgia Oakley is set to remake the story for modern audiences once more. While Thompson’s 1995 film was undeniably star-studded—with a cast that starred Thompson herself alongside Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant and Alan Rickman—Oakley’s version will similarly rely on some major star power, with Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones in the leading role.
Sense and Sensibility follows the three Dashwood sisters, who must leave their family estate and move to a cottage with their widowed mother following the death of their father. This chapter of their life brings new love interests for the elder Dashwood sisters, Elinor (Edgar-Jones) and Marianne, forcing the young women to learn how to navigate through love and loss.
With this year marking Austen’s 250th birthday, it’s no surprise that Sense and Sensibility is the latest in a long list of book-to-film adaptation remakes. Anya Taylor-Joy previously starred in a 2020 version of Emma, while Dakota Johnson took the lead in Netflix’s 2022 Persuasion. Netflix also recently announced a Pride and Prejudice series, which will feature Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet.
