5 hair trends that dominated the fall 2024 runways
From slicked-back hair to embellished buns, these are the hair trends to note ahead of fall.
Warmer weather may be the only thing on your mind right now, but it’s never too early to start planning your vibe for next fall and winter. Fall 2024 will usher in more stylised hair, like slicked-back buns and heavily texturised bobs, according to the season’s runways in New York and London. We rounded up the most exciting hair trends to take note of now, so you’re ready to go once September is here.
Decorative Buns
Hair accessories have been popular as of late, and they show no sign of slowing down. Hairstylist Lacy Redway brought a utilitarian touch to a chignon, with the addition of a classic no. 2 pencil.
Redway created another embellished bun for the Christian Siriano Fall/Winter ’24 show, but with a more polished finish. To mimic the shine of the collection, her team of stylists applied flecks of gold leaf to the top of each bun and the part. Redway used the new Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to lock the gold in place.
Sleek Styles
Slicked-back hairstyles reigned this season (possibly due to the influence of stars like Sofia Richie). To complement Peter Do’s sophomore collection for Helmut Lang, models were sent down the runway with edgy, sleek hair—it was as if they’d stepped outside with slightly wet hair and faced the wind.
At Badgley Mischka, models’ hair was pulled into sleek low ponytails.
Hairstylist Jimmy Paul used Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Weightless Silky Shine Spray backstage at Jason Wu to get the wet, slick look without heavy gels.
Larger-Than-Life Hair
From Miley Cyrus’s Grammys look to the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter ’24 runway, big hair is back. Hairstylist Duffy created a Diana Ross–meets-doll look using loads of hairspray. “From a beauty perspective, Marc wanted this idea of excess,” he tells Bazaar. “The shape is simple, but it’s a suggestion of the late '60s and early ’70s disco moment that is the Supremes.”
Justine Marjan created “expensive, luxurious-looking” hair for the Christian Cowan show. Extra-hold hairspray was also key for this look to create volume.
Intricate Braids
Braids may look high-maintenance. but they are actually easy to achieve and low-effort. Stylist Joey George used a molding wax to create long braids and braided space buns for the Atlein Fall/Winter ’24 show.
Side Parts
Side parts are also back. However, the 2024 version is coupled with contemporary trends, like slick hair, as seen on the Tory Burch Fall/Winter ’24 runway.
