Tripeptides are the supercharged way to boost collagen and reduce fine lines

Peptides have become something of a buzzword in the beauty sphere. Previously, peptides were mostly seen in topical moisturisers, but these science-backed amino acids and key cellular messengers are now being harnessed in everything from hair growth serums to injectables. And with more intrigue, of course, comes more innovation. The skincare industry is suddenly taking note of the growing fascination with peptides and their efficacy for skin longevity, responding with supercharged formulas that include iterations like “copper,” “neurotransmitter,” and “carrier” peptides, each with distinct functions to boost skin health at the deep cellular level.

It’s why brands such as SkinCeuticals are looking to tripeptides to target fine lines, while Medik8 is touting the power of “multipeptides” to activate fibroblasts in the skin (the cells that produce collagen) and reinforce the skin barrier.

What Are Tripeptides?

"Tripeptides are a specific type of peptide made up of three amino acids linked together," explains aesthetic doctor Wassim Taktouk. A quick refresher on peptides: as Taktouk explains, broadly speaking, peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as signalling molecules within the skin, and while their function will vary depending on the type of peptide, they act as the building blocks for collagen and elastin, helping to improve skin’s firmness, aid in collagen loss, as well as support long-term skin health.

Multi-peptide formulas refer to those working in combination, whereas a tripeptide refers to one particular peptide structure,” he adds. “In other words, all tripeptides are peptides, but not all peptide blends contain tripeptides.”

What’s the Science Behind Tripeptides?

"Peptides work by acting as messengers,” Taktouk explains. “As we age, the skin’s natural repair and communication processes become less efficient. Certain tripeptides can help mimic the signals that encourage the skin to support collagen production, strengthen the extracellular matrix, and improve overall skin function.”

That means tripeptides are particularly useful for improving visible signs of aging. "They are not forcing the skin to behave differently, but rather encouraging its natural repair mechanisms to work more effectively," Taktouk shares. Think of them as regenerative skincare; they treat your skin's natural cellular repair process rather than simply providing a surface-level glow.

What’s the Difference Between Tripeptides and Standard Peptides?

The main difference lies in their molecular structure. "A tripeptide contains three amino acids, while other peptides may contain two, six, or even more amino acids. The exact structure determines how the peptide behaves and what biological signal it delivers. Some peptides focus on collagen support, some on hydration, and some are designed to help soften the appearance of expression lines," Taktouk says.

He is quick to point out that the number doesn’t necessarily indicate greater efficacy or potency. "It's less about one being ‘better’ than another and more about selecting the right peptide technology for the desired outcome," he shares.

What Are the Benefits for Long-Term Skin Health?

While the skin health benefits are far-reaching, such as firmer-looking skin, improved texture, improved skin barrier function, and support against collagen loss, Taktouk believes that the biggest benefit is the ability to improve skin’s resilience over time. "Rather than delivering a temporary cosmetic effect, well-formulated peptide products can contribute to healthier-looking skin over the long term," he notes.

Tripeptides can also help deliver ingredients more effectively into the layers of the dermis. However, this will vary depending on the product's molecular size and formulation. "Tripeptides tend to be relatively small compared with larger peptide structures, which may support better skin absorption,” Taktouk says. “However, it's important to remember that even when we discuss ‘penetration’ in skincare, we're largely referring to activity within the upper layers of the skin where important signalling processes occur. A sophisticated formula is just as important as the peptide itself.”

With the category ever expanding and more peptide formulations cropping up than ever, it can be challenging to determine which ingredient is right for your specific skin type. Don’t be swayed by convincing marketing and bold claims. "The most effective peptide products combine peptide technology with complementary ingredients that support overall skin health," he notes. "Ultimately, it’s the combination of clinical testing, formulation expertise, and ingredient synergy that determines how well a product performs—not simply the presence of peptides alone."
