Skincare ingredients that pair well with each other

Optimise your skincare regimen.

Harper's Bazaar India

You may be using chemical exfoliants for a while, but without knowing which ingredient combinations work hard and harmoniously together, you might do more harm than good to your skin. For instance, did you know your trusted retinol should be used with hyaluronic acid to maximise benefits? Or that your AHAs can be used alongside your BHAs? Read on to know more about such potent pairings and their benefits!

Vitamin C and SPF

Think of Vitamin C and SPF as the power couple of the skincare world. Vitamin C's antioxidant properties boost the abilities of SPF, giving you increased protection against sun damage. That’s not all. This duo can also prevent dark spots, pigmentation, and fine lines. So, the next time you reach for your trusted SPF, don’t forget to apply a Vitamin C serum before.

Retinol, hyaluronic acid, and SPF

Anti-ageing superstar retinol is one of the most reactive ingredients. However, pairing it with a humectant like hyaluronic acid keeps the skin moisturised and minimises any agitation or tingling on the skin. And since retinol makes your skin extra sensitive and more prone to sun damage, it just makes sense to let SPF be the third wheel with this combination.

AHAs and BHAs

Together, potent exfoliators AHAs and BHAs are unstoppable. AHAs are water-soluble and exfoliate the skin's surface, and oil-soluble BHAs penetrate deep into the layers of skin and work their magic. The two work well together because they have separate roles to play. BHAs loosen the connection between dead cells, and AHAs slough them away.

However, remember always to use BHA first so it can penetrate deeper and clean your pores before your AHA can get in there and do its thing. Also, always (and we can’t stress this enough) use a ceramide moisturiser and an SPF of at least 30 after applying your AHAs and BHAs.

Niacinamide acid and salicylic acid

Niacinamide, a form of vitamin B3, treats hyperpigmentation and works as an anti-ageing agent. On the other hand, salicylic acid is a BHA that is effective on acne-prone skin. When paired, these ingredients take care of a wide range of skincare issues—from preventing breakouts and cleaning pores, to fighting off signs of ageing.

Vitamin C and glycolic Acid

If your skin ever needs a pick-me-up or an instant boost of radiance, the combination of glycolic acid and vitamin C will be up to the job. While glycolic acid exfoliates the skin and does away with impurities and dead skin cells, vitamin C brightens and illuminates it. This hard-working duo is your answer to dull and dry skin.
