If Greek mythology is to be believed, Minthe (after whom the mint plant has been named) was a water nymph. A god named Hades was lured by her beauty, ensuing an affair between the two. When Hades’ wife came to know about his infidelity, she cursed Minthe, which turned her into a common plant…
Well, the plant might have come through a curse, but its usage is certainly not a curse for your hair. Peppermint oil is a boon if you want to improve hair growth and reduce hair fall. And who doesn't! The oil is enriching for the hair follicles and can also prevent your mane from being lack lustre.
So, what is peppermint oil?

Extracted from the peppermint leaves, the oil is a natural hybrid of spearmint and watermint. The most common uses of peppermint oil are as a flavouring agent in cakes, chocolates, and sweets, and as a cooling agent in cosmetics, such as lip butter, body wash, toner, cleansers, and so on. Thanks to its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, the oil is a considerable choice for hair care too. It helps in preventing hair fall, promotes hair growth, and doesn't fail to make your hair look shiny and smooth.
Peppermint oil and hair growth

Research suggests that menthol present in peppermint oil can actually promote hair growth during the anagen phase (initial phase of hair growth), resulting in an increased number of follicles followed by overall hair growth. A 2014 clinical study proved that menthol also helps in increasing blood flow; therefore, applying peppermint oil onto your scalp can result in better blood circulation, which will encourage more hair to grow. In many cases, the primary reason for hair loss and fine hair is restricted blood flow, so peppermint oil can contribute to better hair growth. A peppermint oil treatment can lock the shine for you because it moisturises the hair cuticles. It also stimulates the regrowth of hair and restores the pH balance of the scalp, making your hair lustrous and smooth.
How to use peppermint oil?

As per studies, the unerring way to use peppermint oil for hair growth is to dilute it with a carrier oil. Due to the oil being a highly concentrated decoction, it is advised to take two drops of peppermint oil and mix it with any other light oil of your choice, such as olive oil. Peppermint itself is a concentrated and heavy oil, therefore, it is advised to use a lighter oil that does not weigh down your mane. Apply this combination to your hair and leave it overnight. The next morning, wash it with cold water. The antimicrobial, antifungal properties in peppermint oil will also help in maintaining scalp health, as well as keep dandruff at bay.
