Everything you need to know about hair filler, the 30-minute appointment that promises a fuller, thicker finish

We get the breakdown from an expert, from how long it lasts to who it's best suited for.

It seems that we're all on the lookout for thicker, fuller hair. From hair-growth serums to shampoos and LED masks, the hair industry is booming right now; but with hair types and growth factors being so individual, it can be difficult to know what will actually deliver on results.

Enter: 'hair filler'. Unlike what you might expect, hair filler doesn't require any needles or injectables into the scalp; instead, it utilises a different method of hair extensions to boost your hair with a fuller, thicker finish.

Beneficial to those who aren't keen on invasive methods and don't have the time to invest in growth serums, hair filler only requires a quick appointment—fast enough to be booked in your lunch hour—and is suitable for those suffering from postpartum or menopausal-related hair loss.

What is hair filler?

As mentioned above, hair filler involves using hair extensions, usually tapes, to add volume to the hair, filling out any sparser areas. Where a full head of extensions would require around 3-5 packs of hair, hair filler only uses up to one pack, making it quicker and lighter than traditional transformations.

"It adds thickness and fullness to areas that need an added boost," explains Katy Grimshaw, founder of Spectrum One Hair Extensions. "We usually opt for our Invisi Tapes for this as they're super lightweight and discreet, perfect for thinner and finer hair."

Who is hair filler suitable for?

Hair filler is a great option for anyone wanting to achieve a fuller-looking head of hair, as well as those who have noticed thinning or finer areas. Hair loss can be a common problem for women experiencing postpartum or menopause, and while hair-growth oils and supplements can be a way to encourage growth over time, hair filler provides an instantaneous solution.

Grimshaw suggests that those with hair that's already extremely damaged should avoid hair filler, but notes that a qualified stylist will be able to give a proper assessment.

What is the process of getting hair filler and how long does it take?

Unlike a full head of hair extensions, hair filler is a much quicker and easier appointment, only requiring around 30 minutes of your time. The stylist will colour-match the extensions to your hair before identifying the areas in which the tapes will be placed.

The application will be completely bespoke to you and your hair's needs. "Usually with a tape application, you would use two tapes and sandwich the natural hair in between them, but if that's feeling too heavy, we can drop to one tape and seal the other side to make them even more undetectable and light," explains Grimshaw.

Once the extensions are applied, the stylist will cut them into the hair to make them look as natural and blended as possible.

What is the maintenance for hair filler?

In general, your new extensions will require a low amount of upkeep, according to Grimshaw. "Day-to-day maintenance is less as there are fewer extensions fitted into the hair," she explains. "For example, blow-drying and styling time for a hair filler client versus a full head of hair extensions is significantly less."

How often do I need to get my extensions reapplied?

Grimshaw recommends having your extensions refitted every 4-5 weeks to avoid damaging your natural hair: "Leaving your extensions to grow out longer than that can cause unnecessary tension, which can cause damage to already vulnerable thin or fine hair," she explains.

A refit appointment is straightforward and just as quick and on time as the original application. "The hair extensions are removed and refitted close to the root, and you can reuse the same hair for over a year if it's kept in good condition," explains Grimshaw.

To keep your hair extensions looking their best and extend their longevity, she states the importance of using heat protection, avoiding chlorine, and limiting UV exposure. She also suggests investing in a hair oil to keep the extensions and natural hair nourished and hydrated.
