There are very few feelings better or more satisfying than layering up your face with products that will hydrate and love your skin. It’s why when Hailey Bieber talked about going to bed feeling a like ‘glazed doughnut’, it resonated with so many people around the globe. And next to a thick overnight cream, face oil is probably the most decadent of all skincare products. Just a few drops can transform your routine to feel like you’re having a relaxing spa day at home every night. And after a long day, does anything sound better?

While numerous face oils are competing for a spot in your night skincare regime, you should familiarise yourself with rosehip oil. Also known as rosehip seed oil, this powerhouse ingredient can keep your skin healthy and happy with regular use. In the last few years, it has gained an immense fan following, thanks to a stamp of approval from some A-list personalities like Kate Middleton, Gwenyth Paltrow, Miranda Kerr, and Kourtney Kardashian among others. Before we tell you more about how rosehip oil works and its benefits, let’s start at the very beginning.

What is rosehip oil and how is it beneficial?

Rosehip oil is a pure plant oil that is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants. It's derived from wild rosehip bushes generally found in the Andes, Africa and Europe. Before it found its place in the beauty world, this oil has been lauded for its healing properties since ancient times .

It is rich in fatty acids, especially linolenic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6) that help in hydration and strengthening the skin’s moisture barrier, as well as boosting collagen production. But that’s not all, rosehip oil is also brimming with antioxidants and vitamins A, C, and E which have anti-inflammatory properties and aid in cell regeneration and fighting acne. It also works on banishing hyperpigmentation, fading dark spots and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. And because of its small molecular structure, this oil can penetrate deep into the layers of the skin to nourish it from within. Talk about being an all-rounder!

How to use rosehip oil?

There are two ways of using rosehip oil—directly massage it into your face as the last step of your skincare routine or mix it into your moisturiser. This will leave your skin feeling smooth and hydrated. Rosehip oil can be used during the day or night. But if you are using it during the day, don’t forget to use sunscreen right after.

While rosehip oil is safe to use on all skin types, it’s always best to be cautious when introducing a new product into your skincare routine, especially if it's an oil as it can be too heavy for some and aggravate their skin troubles. Always do a patch test and begin using it gradually to avoid any potential side effects.
