10 celebrity fringe hairstyles to take inspiration from in 2023

From a curtain fringe to blunt bangs, celebs are loving all the fringe benefits—including Julia Roberts with her ‘Daisy Jones & the Six’-inspired look.

Harper's Bazaar India

It doesn't matter what the weather is or where we are on the horoscope chart, it’s always fringe season. I may be biased (as a keen advocate of the style since 2019) but there’s so many benefits of joining the most banging of clubs. Sure, there’s that little apprehensive voice in your head which says, “it’s too high maintenance,” “maybe I don’t have the right face shape?” or simply, “what if I hate it?” prior to taking the plunge. Rest assured there’s a fringe for absolutely everyone—whether you’re en route to French girl territory or wanting to make a post break-up bang cut.

Jaye Edwards of Edwards & Co. previously told Harper’s Bazaar, bangs are one of the most in-demand haircuts. It’s also the easiest way to update your style without taking on something too dramatic.

Those with short hair can pull off curtain bangs a la Amélie style bob, while long hair looks beautifully Boho with the incorporation of a fringe. You need only look to Dakota Johnson for motivation. “Everyday I get these messages from people saying will this suit me? Which, honestly, a curtain bang can suit almost everyone,” Edwards said.

While my personal sources of fringe lust are from the hedonistic heydays of the ‘60s and ‘70s, courtesy of Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, a slew of stars have recently taken a ride on the wild and shaggy side. Let’s also mention the newly-released Prime Video series Daisy Jones & the Six has offered plenty of bang inspo via key character Daisy (Riley Keough) and perennial bang muse Suki Waterhouse (whom plays Karen Sirko).

But before you grab the scissors, take a look at Bazaar’s bang mood board to help you decide on which style to go for.

Are bangs in for 2023?

*Hint* yes they certainly are, you only need to look below for visual reasoning.

Julia Roberts signals spring with a ’70s fringe

Julia Roberts rarely diverts from her long and wavy auburn locks, but during the opening day of the 2023 Watches and Wonders show in Geneva, Switzerland she debuted a new set of bangs. The Chopard ambassador chicly showed off the new look cut by longtime stylist Serge Normant by wearing an ivory Nells Nelson three-piece knit suit, which she naturally styled with a dazzling Chopard watch and jewellery. During the evening, Roberts swapped European elegance for a little Daisy Jones & the Six—with a rock n’ roll-inspired look. Emphasising her ’70s-cut shaggy fringe, Roberts wore a slinky black mock neck black dress by Victoria Beckham. “Banging out bangs in Geneva with @juliaroberts…” her stylist Elizabeth Chambers shared to Instagram.

Suki Waterhouse with her shaggy ’70s fringe

Suki Waterhouse has been banging for years. In fact, the times she has pinned her fringe back—she looks like a completely different person. Despite being her signature, Waterhouse isn’t shy to play with fringe styles and texture. She’s gone from full bangs to a softer curtain-style and recently during the Daisy Jones & the Six press tour, Waterhouse’s been appropriately showing off a shaggy style ’70s fringe. Honestly, we hope she never grows out the look we’re all aesthetically obsessed with.

Megan Fox looks banging as a blonde

Known for her long dark locks, Megan Fox has had a change of style heart in 2023. The Jennifer’s Body actor took to her Instagram Stories on on January 27 to debut a completely new look—which saw her with a dirty blonde lob and wispy, eye-grazing bangs. While it’s unclear whether Fox’s new look is here to stay, it’s possible the style switch is related to her new sci-fi movie Subservience. Either way, we Fox is living proof that anyone can rock the fringe benefits.

Khloé Kardashian gets shaggy bangs

She’s ending the year with a bang. Khloé Kardashian has gone for the fringe chop, emulating one of 2023’s hottest predicted styles—‘Wednesday Adams bangs.’The 38-year-old showed off her long and shaggy bangs to Instagram on December 16 and simply captioned the post: “Bang Bang.” Unsurprisingly, her legion of friends and fans flooded the comments section—praising Khloé’s new look. Kim wrote: “I love this so much,” meanwhile Kris Jenner said: “So GORGEOUS!!❤️❤️❤️.” The style was created by hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimmons who also commented: “We did that ♥️.” But it’s not the first time Khloé has veered into bangs territory. Fans will remember during Keeping Up with the Kardashian’s early seasons, the reality star had a deep side-swept fringe.

Bella Hadid gets Y2K bangs

Bella Hadid is no stranger to the fringe, but now she’s gone for a ’90s spin. Hadid, known for her effortless Y2K style, debuted a wispy fringe to Instagram on June 5—which saw the model pair an oversized baseball jersey with a micro skirt. That particular look saw her fringe styled in a spiky space bun. Since then, Hadid has shown off her textured and tousled bangs in other Y2K iterations from a slinky white halter dress embroidered with silver beads to a high-fashion athleisure look, encompassing a sheer T-shirt and low rise mustard leggings. Hadid even celebrated the launch of The Fendi Set: From Bloomsbury to Borghese at a Fendi store on Tuesday night wearing a patterned maxi dress over a white collared shirt, with her fringe doing its stylish thing with her hair shiny and straight.

Emily Ratajkowski shows a little je ne sais quoi

Em Rata is back with a bang … but it’s not her first rodeo. The model has dabbled with the style throughout the years—most recently showing off a Jean Shrimpton-esque style on January 17. But now she’s gone full French bang mode for Cannes Film Festival. Dressed in a sheer lace Miu Miu gown, Ratajkowski’s look was classic and polished—with her new fringe only enhancing its elegance.

Sydney Sweeney absolutely did “a thing”

While known for her luscious golden locks, Sydney Sweeney has been playing with hues and texture over the past few weeks. Just a few days ago, a reportedly newly-engaged Sweeney, shared a still from her latest film National Anthem—which saw her with strawberry-blonde hair and textured bangs. While it was unclear at the time whether it was a faux-fringe for the film, Sweeney has seemingly cleared up any confusion with her latest post. Officially showcasing her banging new look, a copper-toned Sweeney acknowledged the ‘fringe benefits’ on Instagram when she wrote: “so.. I did a thing 🍓,” accompanied with a sophisticated and sultry image of the star. Naturally, within a few hours of posting—Sweeney received more than 1.2 million likes.

Lily … in Paris

Lily Collins looks more Parisian than her iconic character. The Emily in Paris star debuted a French girl fringe in early December 2021 — much to the delight of Francophiles and bang queens. Collins took on a flattering, eye-brow length fringe, similar to that of Dakota Johnson’s, but the difference lies in the 32-year-old’s styling. While Johnson keeps things undone and messy, Collins is a little more polished and refined. See her take on a Brigitte Bardot bee-hive on the left. Both looks are fabulous in our opinion.

Zendaya goes for a fun and flirty fringe

The fringe may be commonly associated with France, but Zendaya debuted her take on the look in another charming European city, London. For the British premiere of Dune, the actress showed off wispy, brow-length bangs amongst her long, un-done waves. With a heavily embellished top, fashion’s most in-demand muse expertly knew her hair to be the only accessory to elevate her outfit.

Dua Lipa goes full disco

The ultimate hair chameleon, Dua Lipa, has taken a rollercoaster ride with le fringe — she’s even gone Bridgerton/Regency core with it before. But no matter how she styles it, it always looks divine. Our favourite Dua fringe, however, is when the singer stylishly looks like she’s off to Studio 54 — or should we say, Studio 2054. Lipa looks funky and fresh in the picture opposite with her long and wispy bangs, styled with a sleek half-up, half-down do.
