PSA: Goa’s favourite bakery is coming to Mumbai this week

Here's why you must add indulging in custardy pastéis de nata to your Dussehra plans.

If you’ve been to Goa, chances are you’ve dropped in at the state’s hottest bakery—Padaria Pazeres. The cheery destination in Miramar serves up a mix of European classics like Berliners (German-style doughnuts), financiers, and palmiers, but the crowd winner remains the creamy and decadent pastéis de nata (Portugese egg tarts)—also considered one of the best in the country.

Now, dessert aficionados in Mumbai can tuck into them too. Padaria Prazeres’ chef, Ralph Prazeres, along with his wife, Stacy Gracias, has teamed up with chef Rahul Gomes Periera’s Saz Café in Lower Parel to bring a taste of their popular offerings to Mumbai for a short period of October 4 to 6. The much-loved bakery was started by Goa-born Prazeres, who’s previously staged at world-famous Noma and worked at restaurants like St. John and The Rosewood. Gracias, the other half of the wife-husband duo, comes from a finance background at HSBC and RBS, and overlooks the business side of things at Padaria Pazeres. Childhood friends, Periera and Gracias want to unite people over their shared love of food. It’s this sense of community that they hope to bring to their first pop-up in the city.

While we know you’ll be making a beeline for the flaky pastéis de nata, don’t miss out on some of the savoury creations that they have created exclusively for the pop-up. Try the Goan chouriço Berliner, which is a local twist on the German classic, or dig into the brown butter poached prawn roll that is an ode to a lobster roll. If you’re up for experimenting, go for the bacon liver pâté, which has liver-and-bacon-pâté smeared on crusty toast and served with a port reduction. Their signature roast chicken sandwich made with ciabatta, veggies, and punchy mustard vinaigrette will be there too—and you can wash them down with an iced matcha latte or the classic eggnog (egg milk and Old Monk), which makes for the perfect festive drink that goes down easy. And if you’ve still got room for more dessert, take your pick—you’ll have a hard time choosing between the crisp and buttery palmiers, Berliners generously filled with dark chocolate, and the traditional English trifle spiked with port wine.
