In the western US, native flavours and international cuisines await you.

California’s appeal extends far beyond its cliff-lined beaches, Redwood forests, Sierra Nevada mountains, Central Valley farmland, and Mojave Desert. While travellers flock to Los Angeles for its Hollywood glamour or to San Francisco for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, and cable cars, the state has also emerged as one of America’s most exciting culinary destinations. Diverse, produce-driven, and deeply multicultural, California’s food scene is reason enough to plan a trip.

The state’s road-trip culture naturally feeds into its thriving dining landscape. From coastal highways to tiny hamlets and bustling cities, food is woven into every stop. Taco culture, in particular, defines California’s culinary identity. Fish tacos may be the signature, but al pastor, beef tongue, and cauliflower fillings are equally popular, served in roadside joints, neighbourhood taquerias, and trendy urban eateries alike.

What makes California stand out is the sheer range and quality of its food ecosystem. From San Francisco to Napa Valley and Sonoma County, gourmets will find exceptional produce, meats, breads, cheeses, oysters, wines, and craft beer. In San Francisco, Thai restaurant Kin Khao is a favourite for bold flavours, while the tamales and masa at La Palma Mexicatessen have achieved cult status.

Wine country is equally compelling. Unti Vineyards is known for its Rosé, while Russian River Brewing Company draws craft beer enthusiasts. In Napa Valley, the Japaneseinspired Two Birds/One Stone offers refined dining, while Oxbow Public Market and Hog Island Oyster Co. remain essential stops. Then there is Chateau Montelena, a hidden gem synonymous with Napa’s wine legacy.

California’s restaurant scene thrives on variety: vegan cafés, oyster shacks, celebrity-chef restaurants, sushi bars, pizzerias, taverns, taco shops, and noodle houses coexist effortlessly. Global flavours dominate menus too—samosas, adobo, kebabs, pho, falafels, dim sum, empanadas, tandoori, gyros, and bulgogi all find a place here. Add to that farmers’ markets, food festivals celebrating everything from Dungeness crab to tamales, and an abundance of California wine and craft beer, and the state becomes a true paradise for epicures.
