Everything to know about the 2023 Met Gala—from hosts to rumoured invitees

When the 2022 Met Gala theme, Gilded Glamour, was announced, many were left scratching their heads. The concept was so convoluted it sparked chains of social media debates of users debating what it actually constituted, it was understandable that a host of celebrity guests missed the mark (according to much of the internet, anyway) when it came to their outfits.

Now, organisers of the Met Gala—indisputably one of fashion’s biggest nights—have announced next year’s theme: celebrating the work of one of the most prolific designers of the last century, the late Karl Lagerfeld. As more stylish details are released—including the exceptional line-up of hosts this year—here’s everything you need to know about the 2023 Met Gala which costs upwards of $30,000 (₹ 24,38,420 ) a head to attend.

When is the 2023 Met Gala?

Those familiar with the fashionable affair are no doubt aware that the Met Gala annually falls on the first Monday of May, except during 2021. It was pushed back to September 14 amidst the pandemic, following 2020’s cancellation. All of the most glistening stars, designers, socialites and innovators will therefore descend upon the iconic Met Museum in New York City on Monday, May 1.

What is the 2023 Met Gala theme?

This year will pay tribute to late great Karl Lagerfeld who passed away in 2019. Expect distinguished guests to perhaps turn to the Lagerfeld archives and don the very looks designed by the legendary man himself—or wear the labels he previously served as creative director.

In his illustrious career, Lagerfeld creatively spearheaded Fendi, Chloé and Chanel. Notably, he was responsible for the creation of Chanel’s signature interlocking ‘CC’ monogram. He also fulfilled stints at Balmain and Patou and, of course, founded his eponymous label.

The news of the 2023 theme follows rumours of a ‘space’ theme, a rumour that rapidly picked up traction over on TikTok earlier this year. And, given that Instagram has staked its claim as the most popular news source among young people today—with TikTok not far behind it, as per The BBC—it is of little surprise that the rumour gained mass attention, with little-to-no evidence to help decipher the depth of it’s legitimacy.

Who are the 2023 Met Gala hosts?

Last year’s hosts included the Queen of the Met Gala, none other than Blake Lively, along with her husband Ryan Reynolds and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. If you think 2023 couldn’t beat the above royalty, you’re in for a stylish shock—with the Met Museum only just confirming this year’s line-up. Joining Anna Wintour as honourary co-chairs includes screen, stage and sporting greats: Dua Lipa, Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz and Roger Federer.

Following the announcement, Lipa shared her excitement to Instagram writing: “Excited to announce that I am one of the #MetGala 2023 Co-Chairs alongside Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Anna Wintour. See you for the First Monday in May #CostumeInstitute Benefit.” Truly couldn’t assemble a more talented and loveable hosting team.

Who is attending the 2023 Met Gala?

While hosts have been announced, it’s not until guests actually walk the red carpet that we discover who made the cut. However, that doesn’t stop the public from speculating. Most recently, fans have noted that Taylor Swift is taking a day off from her Eras tour on May 1— aka Met Gala day. It is also likely that Lagerfeld’s famous muses will be invited, including Cara Delevingne and Lily-Rose Depp.

While recent rumours led us to believe the Kardashians have been snubbed from fashion’s biggest night, Page Six reports Kim Kardashian will be attending the 2023 Met Gala. Initially, a source told the outlet that Anna Wintour was “cracking down” on the 2023 guest list with “no Kardashians” to be invited. Since then, another insider revealed Kardashian will in fact be at the Met Museum—along with another member of her famous family. No word yet as to who will join her, but it’s most likely to be Kendall Jenner.

What is the 2023 Met Gala exhibition?

The theme aligns with a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” A press release from the Met revealed the show will “explore the designer’s stylistic language” through around 150 designs. The exhibition will be open to the public from early May until mid-July 2023.

Next year’s gala’s co-chairs, which last year included Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, are yet to be announced. As are the guests of the invite-only benefit, which usually costs upwards of $30,000 a head to attend.
