What is the 60-second skincare rule and how does it work?

Get ready to change your skincare routine forever!

Harper's Bazaar India

Forming a skincare routine is not easy. No matter how many articles you read or reels you watch about what needs to be part of your routine, only an extensive phase of trial and error will give you a clear picture. Once you find products that work for you and a sequence that makes you feel like a glazed doughnut (thank you, Hailey Bieber!), it becomes like muscle memory.

However, every now and then, we learn about a technique that elevates our routine. It might shake you up for a bit to incorporate something new but trust us, this 60-second skincare rule is worth it. This rule basically states that you must cleanse your face for 60 seconds. We get it, this seems like common sense but think back to the last time you washed your face and be honest about how long you massaged it in for. This rule asks you to make a conscious effort and it promises numerous benefits, too. Read on to know why you should follow this as part of the skincare gospel!

Perfectly clean

Okay, this is kind of obvious, but it needs to be said. Cleansing for 60 full seconds removes all the dirt, pollution, make-up, dead skin cells, and anything else that might be clogging your pores. This softens the skin and brightens it up.

Improves blood circulation

Massaging your face for a full minute improves blood circulation and even aids in lymphatic drainage. This can improve your skin’s texture, sculpt your face, and add a healthy-looking glow. Once you follow the 60-second rule for a while, pay attention to how your skin reacts. You will notice it has opened up and slightly tightened as well. All by washing your face for a few extra seconds every day.

Mindfulness

Picture this— you’ve come home after a long day at work. Your eyes are heavy with exhaustion but you know you need to cleanse and moisturise first. So, you start cleansing your face and focus on only cleaning out the dirt and impurities, but this is your moment to just be present and prioritise self-care for a minute. And sometimes, even that much is all you need to take the day off mentally and physically.

Allows better absorption of active ingredients

Applying serums and moisturisers that are brimming with the goodness of actives on clogged pores is a waste of product. It’s like applying colour to unbleached hair. Nothing will penetrate further because there is no place. However, the 60-second cleansing rule solves that by deep cleaning the pores. And if you’re using an AHA or a BHA, even better. They will leave your pores squeaky clean, which allows your actives to dive deeper and work their magic.
