Miranda, Andy, Emily: 'The Devil Wears Prada 2' sets up fashion’s ultimate face-off

Power dressing, advertising money, and a shifting fashion economy

After months of teasing and a steady stream of paparazzi images from the sets, the first trailer for The Devil Wears Prada 2 has dropped. It is shinier, glossier, more stylish and a lot snappier. Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci have returned to rule the publication world with Runway. The original film saw Hathaway’s Andy Sachs’ journey from a journalism school graduate to the most loyal girl Friday of Streep’s sharp editor, Miranda Priestly. In the sequel, Andy has travelled the world as a reporter for years and has now returned ‘home’ at Runway. The story will focus on Miranda, Andy, and Runway as they deal with the challenges of print media in 2026. They both come into conflict with Emily, who is now the head of a luxury brand and controls the advertising money Runway desperately needs.

This transition from reporting to the halls of Runway appears to have informed fashion choices for Andy, who is seen in more androgenous looks, saying goodbyes to the clackers and embracing the functionality of menswear pieces. Hathaway and costume designer Molly Rogers, who worked with the brilliant Patricia Field for the first Devil Wears Prada film and Sarah Jessica Parker's And Just Like That..., came up with a backstory and reasoning for why Andy Sachs has shifted to glamorous functionality and how she can afford such a fabulous wardrobe on a reporter's salary. The answer: Thrifting, based on the education departed by Nigel Kipling!

If studded Valentino pumps were the talk of the town when the first teaser was released last year, the official trailer gives a glimpse of the array of designer outfits that will serve as style inspiration after the film releases on May 1, 2026. Clothes from Phoebe Philo, Armani, Lanvin, Rabanne, archival John Paul Gaultier couture, Jonathan Anderson’s Dior, and many others will be seen at the Met Gala-esque event organised by Runway. But what catches the eye is the red gown on Miranda, custom-created by Pierpaolo Piccioli for Balenciaga. The devil within Miranda peaks and shines as she stares down the cameras on both sides of the green carpet.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 also stars Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Pauline Chalamet, BJ Novak and Conrad Ricamora. David Frankel has returned to helm the sequel. Aline Brosh McKenna wrote the screenplay.
