Featuring lush back water-facing resorts, heritage properties, and more.

Harper's Bazaar India

Kerala’s tourism board recently bagged the Responsible Tourism Global award at the World Travel Mart held in London. While the title was specifically for the STREET project implemented by the tourism mission that aims at expanding and cleaning canals and water bodies for tourism activities, Kerala in general is known for its conscious properties that are all about promoting an eco-friendly way of travelling.

Bazaar India lists the stays that should be on your radar next time you’re planning a Kerala getaway.

Vythiri Village Resort, Wayanad

Be it a family holiday, a romantic getaway or even a solo trip to unwind alone in the middle of nature—Vythiri Village Resort will fit the bill. Nestled in verdant Wayanad and spread across 30 acres of greenery, it offers a range of staying options—from standard rooms to the more lavish private pool villas complete with Jacuzzis of your own.

Marari Beach Resort, Mararikulam

Tucked away in the fishing village of Mararikulam, a short drive away from Kochi is Marari Beach Resort, which has locally-styled cottages surrounded by lily ponds. The resort is an ode to the traditional fisherfolk of the region, so you’ll find a variety of flora and fauna keeping you company during your stay here as the farmers take you on a tour of the 30 acres of coconut farm the property is located in. Even the amenities available at the resort are all traditional earthernware.

Taj Bekal Resort and Spa, Kovalam

The 75 villas and rooms of this luxury resort in Kerala, might be on land, but be prepared to find yourself transported to a complete back water experience with the villas that are fashioned on the local Kettuvallam houseboats of the region. Drawings on tussar silk act as wall décor along with swaying palms in the lush lawns. While here, pamper yourself, and don’t forget to indulge yourself at the Jiva Spa with the five-hour Soundarya treatment of wraps and massages.

The Malabar House, Fort Cochin

East meets west at The Malabar House, which is a restored heritage hotel in the heart of Fort Kochin, a short three minutes walk from the ubiquitous Chinese fishing nets the city is famous for. It marries traditional design with contemporary sensibilities that translates into a place that is at once cosy, inviting, and an apt reflection of art and culture of the city. The 16 rooms at the property all have either verandas or secluded patios, while the suites come with private terraces. If relaxation is on your mind, head to the in-house Purespa that offers traditional Ayurveda therapies and oil massages.

Kumarakom Lake Resort

One of Kerala’s most well-known properties (it played host to Prince Charles on his 65th birthday), Kumarakom Lake Resort is the perfect place to live out your royal fantasies at. All the suites and villas are done up in traditional woodwork, and some even come with a private infinity pool on Vembanad lake. Take a break at the old-school tea shop or unwind after dark at the seafood bar that offers enviable views of the sunset.
