As the days get colder and the bells get louder, it’s time to whip up some festive brews in your kitchen that will warm your soul before snuggling up with a cuppa (or a glass-a) to share with loved ones or perhaps enjoy by yourself. After all, what’s better than a warm drink and a book, or conversations on a cold winter day? 

While drinks like hot chocolate and cinnamon tea are well known (and rightfully so, they are beyond comforting and scrummy), mix it up with some of these unique, and equally tasty concoctions.

Hot buttered rum

A simple drink you can stir up right before a get-together, this one is a certified winner. With history dating back before the colonial days, this is a sweet concoction infused with the delicious richness of butter. All you need to do is mix, pour, and drink! A must try. 

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter, softened
1 splash pure vanilla extract
1 dash ground cinnamon
1 dash ground nutmeg
1 dash ground allspice
2 ounces dark rum
4 ounces hot water
Cinnamon stick, for garnish
Yield: 4 servings 

Eggnog martini

For a change of pace from the classic eggnog, try this modern take on the original Christmas drink by adding a dash of vanilla vodka and amaretto for a light, sweet treat. The amaretto adds a light nuttiness with a universal appeal, and though it is much lighter than normal eggnog, it still retains the OG taste while packing a festive punch. 

Ingredients:
2 1/2 ounces eggnog (here is a recipe for it if you don’t want to buy a mix)
1 ounce vanilla vodka
1 ounce amaretto
Caramel syrup
Brown sugar
Cinnamon stick
Yield: 1 serving

Toasted marshmallow campfire cocktail

An oh-so-sweet dessert, hot coffee, and cocktail all in one, load on the marshmallow fluff with this mouthwatering concoction. Because what screams cosiness more than warm marshmallows by the fireplace? This one is a definite Christmas pick me up. And, you can enjoy it both hot and cold. 

Ingredients:
Marshmallow fluff
Splash of vanilla extract
2 teaspoons simple syrup (to taste)
2 ounces hot espresso
1 ounce vodka (marshmallow flavoured or plain)
Ice, for serving
Toasted marshmallows, for garnish

Cranberry moscow mule

Need something lighter and fruity? We’ve got you. Try this winter twist on a classic Moscow mule, with a spicy and tangy flavour thanks to the cranberry and lemon juice. For a non alcoholic version, replace the vodka with soda or juice. This one is sure to impress all the guests at your next winter party.

Ingredients:
4 ounces ginger beer
4 ounces cranberry juice 
2 ounces dark rum or vodka
1 lime, cut in half
Crushed ice cubes
Fresh or frozen cranberries
Yield: 1 serving

Pumpkin pie martini

Couldn’t get enough pumpkin spice during fall? Well, no worries, because it’s perfect for winter too! With only a few basic ingredients required, this creamy and rich drink sings with flavours top and bottom. Choose to make it as fancy as you want, or stick to the basics—it tastes delicious either way. 

Ingredients:
3 ice cubes
2 ounces pumpkin spice/vanilla/regular vodka 
1 ounces dark rum 
2 tablespoons pumpkin puree
1 ounces maple syrup
¼ tsp pure vanilla extract
A pinch of pumpkin pie spice
½ ounces half-and-half (half whole milk, half cream)

Optional rim:
Maple syrup (to taste)
1 whole sweet cracker biscuit (only for garnish)
1/4 tsp each: pumpkin pie spice & ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
Yield: 1 serving
