She shot to fame with the critically-acclaimed Bollywood drama The Lunchbox, starring alongside the late Irrfan Khan in 2013. The film received rave reviews and Nimrat Kaur proved her mettle as an actor worth her salt despite not having a plethora of films associated with her biography back then. However, not too many people know that Nimrat’s first tryst with the camera was actually for a two-part music video way back in 2004, where she lit up television screens across the country in the romantic hits Tera Mera Pyar by Kumar Sanu and Yeh Kya Hua by Shreya Ghoshal.

While Nimrat went on to do bigger projects such as Anurag Kashyap’s Peddlers, where she also made her Cannes debut in 2012, the actor says that music has always been her constant companion and helps her navigate all challenges in life. “Music means everything to me, as a person and an artist. I rely on it to base the foundation of my characters and lose myself while listening to my favourite tracks when I’m unwinding or driving,” she shares with Bazaar India, while also giving us an insight into some of the tracks that she is currently obsessed with. “My mother was a great musical influence while I was growing up and she introduced me to all the old Hindi songs. However, I now discover the latest tracks through friends or my sisters,” discloses the actor while counting hip-hop and RnB among her favourite genres.

Nimrat reveals that Summer High by Indian-born Canadian rapper AP Dhillon has been keeping her energised of late, but her all-time favourite artists are the celebrated Irish rock band U2, British rock group Coldplay, and legendary Indian singers Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, because “their music represents emotions and feelings in the truest way, and is evergreen.” Nimrat’s current playlist features a mix of artists such as rapper Kanye West, alternative RnB artist The Weeknd, Austrian electronic music duo Klangkarussell, American musician Sufjan Stevens, and Icelandic music producer Ólafur Arnalds, among others.
