#FarmToFace: Go green with these homegrown eco-friendly skincare and makeup brands

For your next small step to lower your carbon footprint, rethink your skincare choices.

Harper's Bazaar India

Okay, we’ve all thought about, or hopefully at least talked about our carbon footprints. And while we work on fixing the larger pieces of the puzzle—transportation choices, food habits, waste management—there are the smaller things we are doing every day that are adding up without us knowing. Like our skincare choices, which could be harming the environment with its plastic packaging, animal-testing, and ingredients that are depleting our forests. Remember Reece Witherspoon (aka Elle Woods) fighting to free her pet Bruiser Woods mother who was stuck in the animal testing division of a beauty conglomerate?

Well, we needn’t start a movement, although, why not, but just a simple step of choosing the right skincare brands can be a step in the right direction. And these Indian brands are delivering skincare goodness that is eco-friendly and environmentally-conscious.

This one has been around for a long long time, but we cannot rave about it enough. The brand motto says it all right 'if you can't eat it, don't use it'. The brand combines locally-sourced natural ingredients (only from sellers practicing sustainable farming and efficient waste management) with modern chemistry, are cruelty-free, and have minimal plastic packaging. Need we say more? Oh wait, their manufacturing facility is also designed to ensure ‘Zero Carbon Footprint’!

Kama Ayurveda

Another OG, this one boasts of products that are free from artificial colours, parabens, petrochemicals, fragrances, and animal cruelty. And, just as the former, they source their natural ingredients from small-scale farmers who adhere to sustainable practices.

Ras Luxury Oils

Another believer of what’s good enough to put on your skin should be good enough to put in your body, Ras Luxury Oils is a new one on the block that has been making the spotlight for its sulphates, parabens, silicones, preservatives, mineral oil, additives, alcohol, synthetic fragrances and other chemicals free range. Add to that its farm-to-face philosophy that has it source its ingredients from a sustainable farm in Raipur, where the founders are from, and we don’t wonder why this one is as popular.

Pahadi Local

One of the lesser-known names, this one was inspired by the green, and thoughtful skin practices of the locals in Shimla (which is where the founder is from) using healing natural ingredients found in the mountains. From sourcing to extraction, this brand ensures minimum carbon footprint. And, to make sure they also filter only naturally, they use a simple muslin cloth to do the job. It doesn’t get more farm-to-face that this.
