Luxe train journeys that make you appreciate India’s beauty even more
Sneak a peek into the country’s natural wonders, heritage sites, and its wild side.

Train journeys in India cover thousands of kilometers and give you a window to some of the most scenic views that you can find in the country–from lush landscapes to ancient kingdoms. While putting trains and luxury in the same sentence may sound odd, luxury trains around the world and in India continue to turn this notion on its head, in style. These trains offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences and let you uncover the country’s cultural gems in complete opulence.
With India’s beloved and most extravagant train–the Maharajas’ Express, returning on tracks next month and Palace on Wheels re-starting after a pandemic-induced break as well, there's never been a better time to hop onto one and get exploring. Here’s our pick of four luxury trains you can take in India that prove the journey is as important as the destination.
Maharaja’s Express
Route: Delhi-Jaipur-Ranthambore-Fatehpur Sikri-Agra-Orchha-Khajuraho-Varanasi-Delhi
Maharajas’ Express is often compared to luxe Western trains such as the Orient Express, and for good reason–the opulent cabins it offers look straight out of a palace, the food is delectable, and the high-end hospitality is fit for kings! Owned and operated by IRCTC, Maharajas' Express runs between October and April, covering a number of destinations in North and Central India. The train gives you the option to choose from four unique itineraries with the Indian Panorama route being the most extensive–it spans Jaipur, Ranthambore, Agra, Khajuraho and Varanasi.
Palace on Wheels
Route: Delhi-Jaipur-Sawai Madhopur-Chittorgarh-Udaipur-Jaisalmer-Jodhpur-Bharatpur-Agra-Delhi
Palace on Wheels is true to its name with lavish interiors that are guaranteed to take your breath away. Considered the pride of Rajasthan, the luxury train has been in India since 1982 and is run by the RTDC in association with the Indian Railways. The train, inspired by the maharajas of yore, pampers passengers with utmost comfort and picturesque vistas. It features 14 elegant cabins that are kitted with all modern amenities one can think of, but it is the magnificent dining car that will quickly become your favourite–the indulgent food coupled with the palatial decor makes the dining experience one of the best in the country. The train begins its journey from New Delhi and covers major spots in Rajasthan like Jaipur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, before making its way back to the capital.
The Golden Chariot
Route: Bengaluru-Mysore-Hampi-Mahabalipuram-Thanjavur-Kumarakom-Kochi-Bengaluru
Taking you through some of the most famous (and spectacular) spots in South India, The Golden Chariot offers a range of three journeys to choose from. If you want to explore all the major destinations in one go, Jewels of South should be your pick–it covers eight incredible destinations across Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu over seven days. With its name inspired from the stone chariots of Hampi, sit back and get a taste of erstwhile South Indian opulence that comes with a side of enviable views. The train’s plush cabins are made for relaxation, but there’s also a spa that takes the royal treatment to the next level.
The Deccan Odyssey
Route: Mumbai-Aurangabad (Ellora caves)-Pench-Tadoba-Ajanta-Nashik-Mumbai
Inspired by the immensely popular Palace on Wheels, The Deccan Odyssey was launched with an aim to showcase the natural beauty of Maharashtra. With two multi-cuisine restaurants, a fully-equipped bar, and a small library in the sitting lounge, you’ll be spoilt for choice during your time aboard. The train offers six different routes–the Maharashtra Wild Trail that covers Ellora caves, Pench, Tadoba, Ajanta and Nashik which will be a hit with the kids. History enthusiasts will love the Indian Odyssey route that traverses all the popular heritage spots in Jaipur, Udaipur, Agra and Vadodara. No matter which route you choose, one thing is for sure–you’re in for a memorable journey!
