We’ve all had those moments—of frustration, exhaustion, stress, and of trying to find just a minute of quiet in constant chaos. Amidst the din of city life, we all seek to escape, once in while (more often than not), to a place away from the noise, closer to nature, to finish that half-read book, and finally begin the meditation practice you were supposed to a few months ago, but never got to. We know it’s only the beginning of the year, but it’s never too early to go for a short getaway for that much-needed calm and quiet, when things get too much. So, convince your friends for a road trip or book those flight tickets for a solo trip and head to these places across India for a peaceful break.

Alleppey, Kerala

Most famously known for its backwaters, canals and houseboats, the town of Alleppey in Kerala doesn’t need much of an introduction. Find your corner amidst coconut trees and with a cup of coffee, relax and enjoy. Wake up to the sound of birds chirping and a stunning sunrise, while you stay in houseboats, along the backwaters of Kerala. You can also rejuvenate with a trip to the spa or get adventurous and witness snake boat races or go kayaking. Take a walk along the town’s many, many beaches such as Marari or Pozhiyoram, and witness the sunset and, of course, don’t forget to indulge in the local cuisine with dishes like appam, stew and more.

Cherrapunji, Meghalaya

Touted to be one of the ‘wettest places on Earth,’ Cherrapunji in Meghalaya is definitely the place to be if you’re a lover of everything nature, hills and rains. Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the place, with the Living Root bridges and lush green hills. You could choose to stay in and read, write, sleep, do some yoga or anything else you wish to with a view of the clouds that are low enough to touch your nose, or go kayaking in the pristine and crystal clear waters of river Umngot that flows through the town of Dawki, close to Cherrapunji. We promise, you won’t regret it.

Kasol, Himachal Pradesh

Situated on the bank of river Parvati, Kasol is a tiny hamlet in Himachal Pradesh, and the place to go to if you like cold weather. If you’re looking to escape the humidity and heat of cities, treat yourself to a little break right here. Spend your days lounging in the winter sun by the river with hot chocolate galore or get those endorphins going by going on a trek. Explore the host of cafes and restaurants that the town has to offer, and don’t miss the Israeli cuisine which is available in abundance throughout the town. Here’s your cue to pack those sweaters and knits tucked away at the far end of your closet!

Gokarna, Karnataka

Here’s a pro tip: switch off your phone and all other devices and take this time to reflect, breathe and just be.

Binsar, Uttarakhand

Binsar, a town in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region, is a beautiful hill station and the perfect getaway for those who love birdwatching and trekking.
