This year’s fall/winter bag trends are bringing it back to the basics, with a few surprises along the way. We looked through all the fall collections to see which trends rose to the top and consulted retail experts to guide us through this season’s biggest fall bag trends.

“While there’s still appetite for trend-forward pieces, [customers] are investing in bags that have a distinct point of view, whether that’s through texture, shape, or craftsmanship,” Caroline Maguire, senior fashion director of Shopbop, tells Bazaar. The result is a fall lineup that feels timeless yet contemporary: ladylike top-handles, totes in luxe croc-embossed finishes, and flap bags that bring elegance to your everyday wardrobe.

However, there are a few bag trends where the styles loosen up, taking us back to a more playful 2000s era. Embellished shoulder bags are emerging as fall’s answer to pared-back clutches for the season ahead. “We are loving the more opulent versions from the likes of Valentino and Fendi, when you’re just wearing an evening bag for the day, which really gives that early-2000s feel,” says Tiffany Hsu, chief buying officer at Mytheresa.

And speaking of Y2K, Hsu is confident that throwback styles from the early aughts are more than fleeting nostalgia; they’re bags worth investing in currently. From Chloé’s Paddington to Saint Laurent’s Mombasa, the era’s It bags are proving their distinctive shapes and unmistakable attitude still feel fresh two decades later.

The Retro Top-Handle

“I’m loving top-handle bags and their timeless, vintage-inspired feel,” says Maguire. “This season, brands are giving the silhouette a modern update through rich colors, interesting hardware, and beautiful textures like croc embossing. It’s the kind of bag that instantly makes an outfit feel polished, whether you’re wearing relaxed denim or elevated tailoring.” As seen at Prada, Miu Miu, and Hermès, the top-handle bag is one of the season’s most coveted accessories.

Party Bags for Day (and Night)

“We have seen a lot of novelty-style bags being reimagined as small day bags that also double as evening bags,” says Hsu. “Think: Valentino’s DeVain or the Fendi Baguette.” Taking inspiration from the runways, try one of these playful, statement-making styles to add some personality to your everyday looks, with details ranging from sequins and paillettes to intricate beading and embroidery. You’ll find contemporary options in the mix as well from Staud, Alèmais, and Cult Gaia.

Soft and Slouchy

“Slouchy oversize styles are making a comeback. They feel effortless, functional, and perfectly in step with the more relaxed way we’re dressing now,” says Maguire. An easy counterpoint to the season’s more structured silhouettes, these relaxed handbags can complement nearly any look. “We are seeing larger, softer, less structured bags coming through. Think: the Chanel Maxi Flap, Balenciaga’s soft Rodeo, and the Saint Laurent Maxi Suede Flap,” adds Hsu. Spotted also at Bottega Veneta and Ferragamo, they offer a way to embrace a laid-back approach with your leather bag this fall.

The It-Bag Revival

Nostalgia is at an all-time high, with early-aughts styles having a major resurgence. That also means beloved bags from the past are back in the spotlight. “The early-2000s It bags are having a moment, starting with the Chloé Paddington, the Fendi Baguette, and the Saint Laurent Mombasa,” Hsu says. You can’t talk about the era without mentioning Balenciaga’s City bag and Mulberry’s Alexa—two Y2K It bags that feel just as relevant today, as evidenced by their recent appearances on celebrities Charli XCX and Dakota Fanning.

The Flap Bag

Fashion is focusing on the flap bag again this season, with the classic shape showing up in new iterations across the runways. “The maxi flap is definitely the newest addition to the trend this year, and the Matthieu [Blazy] Chanel effect has everything to do with this trend,” says Hsu. “The maxi flap style is definitely a trend we see working well for us in the day-bag category. It’s a nice update from the tote that has been trending for a while.” As seen everywhere from Tory Burch to Gucci to, of course, Chanel, the flap bag is proving its versatility well beyond its traditional associations.

Croc-Embossed Textures

“Animal textures, especially croc embossing with rich burnished finishes, are one of the biggest stories,” says Maguire. “They feel polished rather than bold, making them an easy way to add interest to even the most minimal look.” The tactile finish taps into the season’s retro sensibility, as seen at Prada, Gucci, and Chanel. From work-ready totes by Toteme and Tory Burch to an evening clutch from Liffner, there’s a croc-embossed style for every occasion.

Oversize Totes

“I’m also firmly in the big-tote camp,” says Maguire. “I love a bag that works as hard as you do, and oversize totes are the ultimate combination of fashion and function. They’re perfect for days when you’re carrying your laptop, gym clothes, snacks for the kids, and everything in between but still want your bag to feel sophisticated.” These practical carryalls made a strong showing on the runways at Proenza Schouler, Celine, and Loewe, where proportions ranged from oversized shoppers to supersize top-handles.
